Las Vegas - A Different View

This week my husband and I went to Las Vegas to spend a little time with my sister and her husband. We usually meet there about once or twice a year, and stay in a different hotel every time we go ... including Paris, the Golden Nugget, MGM Grand, Ballagio, Venice, Luxor, Mandalay Bay, Caesars and several other hotels and condos, as well as a few resorts that are in the suburbs.
For the first time ever, we stayed at the Flamingo.
The Flamingo is one of the oldest hotels in Las Vegas and, although it has obviously been rebuilt and expanded since 1944 when it was opened by Bugsy Siegel, it is definitely not the fanciest. If you have strolled along the Strip in the past, Margaritaville is part of the Flamingo.
There are several features I liked about the Flamingo. First, there is a little nature preserve called The Habitat behind it, which is a delightful place to walk or just sit on a bench by the waterfalls. Second, although the Flamingo faces the Las Vegas Strip, it also sits along a quiet little tree-lined walkway with restaurants and shops.
The giant Ferris Wheel you see in the background is actually a place where you can have drinks with your friends, enjoying your own, private "happy half-hour" in a car that holds up to 40 people. Great idea for a party!
I'll post a few other photos of Las Vegas in the coming days. Meanwhile, I thought this was a view that most of you have not seen.

I have not been in years. I liked it better when people dressed up as the sun went down, and you could see big name stars in small rooms. Those days are gone.

No one dresses up anymore and the big stars I have seen usually look tired when you get up close to them.

I love this view of the palms and the architecture, including the Ferris Wheel. What a nice place, not at all my image of Las Vegas.

I love the fact that I am able to share a different view of Vegas ... something different than most people have seen.

Lake Tahoe is definitely a good place to go and the surrounding areas are beautiful. I have been there many times in the past and even attended two weddings there.

I also love Reno and Laughlin. However, my favorite Nevada resort is Lake Tahoe. Our family has spent many wonderful weekends in the mountains around there.

@Marcyaz - You don't hear about weddings in Lake Tahoe as much as you do in Las Vegas, but the same easy marriage laws apply and it is a beautiful spot for a wedding!

How lovely! The Flamingo has been there since the 1940's, so a lot of people have fond memories of it.

@LadyDuck - Yes, the Flamingo is one of the original hotels (although it has been completely rebuilt since the 40's). Pretty amazing to see what has happened to Las Vegas in the past 75 years!

My husband and I love the desert, but we usually enjoy the desert that is nearby ... around Palm Springs and other parts of California.

@crazyhorseladycx - There are beautiful rock formations in some parts of the desert. I also love to drive through Joshua Tree National Forest and the San Bernardino Mountains. Borrega Springs has beautiful areas around it. I don't know of any petroglyphs in California, although there might be some. When we raised our kids in Texas, we used to take them to Taos, Red River, Angel Fire, and other parts of New Mexico. There are some beautiful spots there!

So interesting Deborah- always a good writer- ha! I have been to most of those spots in the past and loved the grand-ness of them all- How was the inside of the Flamingo then- is it fully renovated, etc. Looks lovely with the palm trees.

I would describe the Flamingo as "very nice." It is certainly much better than the Motel 6 (where I stayed once when I was young). However, it doesn't come close to being as elegant as the Ballagio, Paris, the Venetian, or Wynn. It is a "middle-of-the-road" hotel for Las Vegas. The room was nice, with a comfortable bed and lounge chair and an oversized shower.

@DeborahDiane I know there's the older part of Las Vegas too- we went back for an anniversary dinner down there- it's quite the town.

I have only been to Vegas once and we stayed at the Flamingo Hilton. I got a fabulous rate of like $38 a night so it was irresistible. I have always wanted to return but it is a long flight from here.

If you ever get to the United States, there are probably better places to visit than Las Vegas. However, we enjoy visiting the city once in a while.

I've only been to Carson City and Reno, but never Vegas. My older son had his bachelor party at the Winn (?) and has been there often. My brother used to get flown out by the large hotels when he gambled, but only goes for business reasons now. I love the Ferris wheel!

Vegas has definitely earned its nickname "Sin City," but it is a fun place to visit. There is no other place on earth like it. My sister owns several boutiques, shops and restaurants in the Midwest, and she visits a couple of wholesalers in Las Vegas once or twice a year to place orders for her boutiques in person, rather than through their catalogues. She likes to see what she is actually ordering for her stores, when she can. As a result, Las Vegas is a fun place for my husband and me to meet my sister and her husband. The Wynn is another upscale hotel. You see lots of young groups of men and women having bachelor and bachelorette parties in Las Vegas!

Many people who have been to Vegas would be surprised to know that this photo was taken less than 50 yards from the famous Strip! It is a little secret corner of the city that relatively few tourists know about.
