Does being thrown in a general category bother you?

I am a bit bothered when someone lumps me in a 'group'.
For instance, I am a man.
And I see discussions about 'Why do men cheat'.
I'm a man, I don't cheat.
I see a discussion about smokers.
I am a smoker...but maybe I'm not a rude person.
I see lots of examples...and they describe people in general...but for some reason, anyone in a certain classification gets thrown 'under the bus' in some discussions.
There seems to be a tendency to leave out the word 'some'.
Why are some smokers inconsiderate?
Why do some men (or women) cheat?
Why are some people set in their ways and aversive to other opinions that differ with theirs?
'Some' is only four letters...but it can change things quite a bit.
Why do (some) people not get it?

SOME people are so passionate about whatever they are bickering about at the moment that they aren't concerned with the SOME at all.
They want "lump" us altogether.

So true. Sometimes, some people don't stop and think. I try. Ot to lump people together, but stereotypes, become stereotypes for a reason.
A simple example......all people of Dutch descent are blonde. If you met myself, my husband, our children and grandchildren, you would agree wholeheartedly with that statement. If you met the rest of the family you would never agree to that statement.

@JolietJake I think I have heard every dumb blonde joke at least once. My hair was naturally the very pale blonde that people try to achieve, but rarely do with bleach. I was constantly being asked who did my hair. Why do so many people think if you are blonde, you must bleach your hair. This picture shows a couple of my blonde grand babies.

Or the entire 'dumb blonde joke' thing. I've met some very intelligent blondes and some totally clueless brunettes.

Which is why 'some' should be used.
Unless you're talking about breathing...I'm pretty sure all of us do that.

@JolietJake Some people do require instructions even for that

I see political affiliations doing that at times too...lumping all Democrats or Republicans or whatever as one vast group, and ignoring the differences in the people.

I was going to make the suggestion that simply adding the word some to a statement stops it being a generalisation but I see you beat me to it.
Yes, it bothers me a lot and sweeping generalisations are one of my pet peeves.

Sometimes it does bother me, but other times it doesn't. Like the dumb blond jokes. I love dumb blond jokes.
