Camping with a Nasty Neighbor (A Peeping-Tom)

Canada
April 18, 2016 8:45am CST
Before you read this - just know my sister and I have camped together with our children for over 40 years. We have had ONLY TWO scary experiences in all those years. The first year it was bears becasue NY closed the dumps and this story from several years later... When our children were small, at night after the kids were in bed Elaine and I would stay up and play games and talk by the fire. We still do that. This particular year Elaine and I were spooked in the dark with twigs breaking and rocks making strange noises against each other in the river... We noticed during the day the rocks never made a sound. They clunked when the kids and adults played with them in the river but the river was not strong enough to move rocks on its own. The noises went on nightly. We knew it had to be someone trying to scare us so we tried not to react anymore. We were told there was a lunar eclipse and everyone was going to be on the bridge to watch it. At dusk we walked to the bridge. It was full of happy campers looking for a show. We found a spot for the 8 of us and sat down and visited with neighbors. I noticed the single guy who was camped above us on the hill was talking with the ranger. Strange I thought, the neighbor was wearing hip waders and a dark Australian oiled duster-riding coat. My brain went into overtime and I knew immediately he was the rock mover and twig snapper. I asked my sister quietly "Why would a man wear hip waders and that coat while camping" and her response was “maybe because he liked the feel of rubber”. That made us both laugh out loud but she knew what I meant. He likes to walk in water and scare women in the dark. After the eclipse we headed back to our site. The hip waders guy caught up with us and started a conversation. He was pleasant, working somewhere nearby on a short-term job and sleeping in a tent a night. When we headed down the hill to our campsite he said, "Not too many years ago I saw a bear run down that road". Not so nice, I thought, he really is trying to scare us (and our kids)! I glared at him and told him not too many years ago we had the last site on the campground and had bears in our site every night. We haven't seen or heard one since then. He looked surprised and asked if we were “Camp Insanity”. I said yes, he laughed and said he remembered us. The rock thumping and twig snapping stopped. We think he knew he couldn't scare us anymore because his outfit, his cover, was blown. We keep a journal yearly so we can remember these stories. Do you keep a journal of the interesting things you do? The photo is our beautiful river on a foggy day.

I've never kept a journal, I wish I had. Fortunately this old head has acted as quite a good storage space. I remember your bear story - I did a limerick about it on Bubblews. i wonder what that guy got from trying to scare you?

@PainsOnSlate Unfortunately I didn't keep it Marilyn - sorry. I included it in my series on my Bubbling Buddies, and anything that was just relevant to Bubblews I let go. I can't remember how it went. Perhaps I'll write another one for you.

@PainsOnSlate Why don't you re-write your bear post for here? It is a great story. I won't worry about a limerick, but if one comes to me you shall have it.

@miniam Maybe even older... This is how we add light to our campsite. They are left burning when we go to bed..tea lites and covered, if knocked off the table they will not be burning anymore...

@PainsOnSlate I don't know what is better to me,I feel the tea lights will just give your position should a bad guy be somewhere close by. I think im too much of a weakling to go camping.I'm glad you like it

@PainsOnSlate Some people are like that. They can't stand people enjoying themselves. What a creep! I used to keep a journal writing down both important and unimportant things. But sadly during a decluttering spree,I disposed them.I regret that. Now I am thinking of starting one.

Ours is precious. 30 years of camping with our children, seeing them grow and move on and come back as adults when they can...its priceless. I'm sorry you tossed yours. And do start it again. Its history. Ours I hope keep going long after my sister and I are gone. Ours is not about life, its about one or two weeks our of every year and its full of love, laughter and tears.

You should tell him that bears are terrified of you, because you like to eat bear paws! I wonder why he wants to scare others. He could have enjoy the campsite without making a nuisance of himself.

I agree with you, there is no answer to the questions, only that man knows the answer. I feel sorry for him for being such a loser, such an unhappy man.

@PainsOnSlate We tend to hold on to things when we travel. Little tokens like hours of operation and what not for places that we feel that we will return to.

nice photo... that guy sounds like an idiot... and not very nice really.... I think what he was doing was unpleasant... trying to spoil peoples enjoyment of camping....... you handled it more graciously than I think I would have..... I don't keep a journal ... but use photos as my memory joggers and that's enough for it to come back to me... well... so long as you do not want to be too specific on dates that is... lol's

We wonder how many women he had frightened. The ranger back then was a man, a woman took over his job and when we told her about our experience she blew a gasket...said he would have been kicked out in a heartbeat....We've never seen him again.

He was just a creep. The new ranger said she would have him gone in a heart beat but the old guy who was working there back then was not approachable.

That would be scary, but at least it stopped after you saw him. I used to keep a journal of all my kids firsts, but eventually I started forgetting to write things down. I think I just got too busy (and they got older so the firsts came less often).

The photo caught me and kept me tied up. I could hardly concentrate on your story. I would love to watch bears. Wouldn't scare me. We used to go to the dump to watch bears come find food when we lived in Idaho. That guy sure had a naughty sense of humor.

When I was a kid, Dad would take us to the dump at night to see the bears too. Our First Camp Insanity got its name because the state closed the dumps and we had hungry bears in our campsite every night. Our children were little and it was scary. The photo of the river always makes me enjoy the river more. Most of my photos were sunny day ones but htis moody photo touched my heart...

What a nasty, underhand thing to do. I hope he wasn't Australian, despite the coat. They're mostly called Drizabones here although that's a brand name.

I'm sure he was a local who needed a place to sleep and a tent is a pretty cheap sleep. It was his coat that opened my eyes, In the dark wearing something that dark he could pretend to be a big rock in the river...When I saw the hip waders and the coat I knew he was our ghost. When he mentioned bears in front of our children in the dark I knew he was worthless and a piece of crap. It was him, we never heard another peep or twig break again. It was him...just a creep.
