One hundred years

This is a photo of our well house at the springs. Sometimes they call it the City Springs, sometimes it is called Crystal Springs.
The springs are on private property and the city has leased them for a nominal amount ($1 ?) for 99 years. We are in our 100th year. Just recently we have signed a lease for another one hundred years with the property owner.
Yes, I am sure the water receives some chlorine treatment, but not nearly so much as I have experienced in other places. I cannot smell it in the water.
I am sure the water is regularly tested for quality as well.
I am constantly amazed at the health and vigor of many of the older citizens of Florence. Do you suppose it is the water?

There are places in the US that have made it illegal to catch rain water. My grandparents had a cistern to catch the rain water. They used that for bathing and washing and heating to do dishes. For cooking and drinking they had a well and would bring water in coolers up to the house.

@JudyEv I am sure there are reasons for those kinds of restrictions, just as there are reasons for banning burning.

@GardenGerty In Queensland where they had bad droughts over some years, they banned rainwater tanks too. They said they needed the rain to go into the soil and to the water-table.

For some reason I can't see the photo! It could definitely be your good water source. We have excellent well water here, but the water in Florida tastes awful to me. I won't drink it. Crazy! After I commented, the photo appeared. Love it!

@DianneN It probably is good for us, but I cannot bring myself to drink it.

I have places where the water tastes or smells bad to me. At my brother's house, in Oklahoma, I think it tastes mossy. Other places not far from me the water tastes of sulfur.

@GardenGerty The water in Georgia smells of sulfur. I won't go near it.

It is beyond me why you sign a lease for 100 years. Here we have some longevity counties where there are many centenarians.Scientists partly attribute their great age to the drinking water that is high in selenium.

The land and water does not belong to the city. The property owners have every right to cut us off if they wanted to. The lease guarrantees that even if they were to sell the property the city could use the water. Selenium could be one of the minerals.

Sorry I don't understand- is that the well house that is feeding your property? And why Florence when you come from Kansas?

My profile says "Marion, Kansas" because it would not allow "Florence, Ks." a small town outside of Marion. This is the pump house where the spring water is pumped to our water tower for the whole city of Florence.

@GardenGerty yes and now they all can say- "there must be something in the water" lol!

The saying goes, there must be something in the water. Healthy living, good choices, drink plenty of water.
Our town water is treated with chlorine. You can smell it too. My clients will often offer me a glass of water and I refuse. I always bring spring water with me.

@GardenGerty I can't stand the taste of chlorinated water.

I know there is some chlorine. I have seen the location where the water goes through. It is not bad, though. Maybe it evaporates out before it gets across town to the stone water tower.

I am fairly certain that all monitoring that is required is done. None of us wants to get ill that is for sure.

Other people have said that to me as well. I guess I am glad not to be in Florida. The water here tastes a little sweet, very refreshing.

@GradenGerty the house should be made a monument. Most likely that water is qualitative. We cannot drink our tap water unless we boil it. So at times we get special mineral water that is good for the health.

This is an active well house. There is a carved granite monument at the area that tells some of the history. I would hate to have to boil water to use it, but that happens some times.

It could be the water one never knows. So was the new lease for 1 dollar as well?

It has machinery inside so they would have to replace it to continue to have water. There is a monument on the property that explains the springs.

This is the pump house. It has the mechanism that pumps the water to our town. The water rights belong to the community for another 100 years.

All their life, or if they have moved here, most of their life. I know people twenty or more years older than I am who put me to shame as far as their energy goes.

that must be quite the family, who owns the land and still lets the city lease it that cheaply

It is the water that we lease that cheaply, I think. Of course there is a land aspect of it as well.

Yes, we are. Even when the conditions have been drought, the spring has run.
