A very unexpected appointment for the Eye hospital

After my recent flourish of treatment on my right eye the problem appears to be solved. Therefore I was given a future appointment for late June, at which time the overall result will be assessed again and arrangements made to have the cataract done on my left eye. What I had forgotten was that I was told the new lens was slightly misted, which would require some laser treatment to clear. This morning I received a letter for an appointment on 27th May, which I presumed was my appointment brought forward. Now that I have read it again I realise that this is for the laser treatment, which should prove to be an interesting visit.

I dread the day that I have to have cataract surgery! I was told a while back that I may have the beginnings of a cataract on one of my eyes. I hope all goes well with you!

The cataract operation was fairly simple, although I was seriously apprehensive. My problem came when I developed complications and required further surgery.

Will this interfere with all of your holiday plans? Or, are you going to sneak in a trip before the appointment? Any decision on location yet?

It will not affect my plans because I intend to go away earlier, most likely to Malta.

@Asylum Great. Always good to add fun to your life. Have you been to Malta before? Isn't it very dry? Do you like that?

The June appointment is to have my previous operation assessed and should lead to my next cataract operation, which will likely be in July.

The lens that was fitted during my cataract whas become cloudy, so the laser treatment is to remove the opacity.

Everyone I know who has had cataract surgery is just thrilled with the results. I'm sure you are looking forward to everything involving the surgeries over and done with.

I was happy with the result until the capsule holding the lens contracted, which caused another operation to cut away part of the casing.

@AmbiePam That operation was horrifying, bit I had no real choice since the eye could see nothing.

This is apparently a fairly commonplace development after a cataract operation.

@Asylum You have provided a wealth of knowledge on the subject. This will come in handy for all of us as we age and need the procedure ourselves.

Hope the laser treatment works well and that you can proceed forward with your left eye in June. I'm sure you'll be happy the day both eyes are fixed

I don't understand how a laser treatment will help to clear the mistiness from the lens, but I guess that's why I'm not a doctor. Is there anything they can do for the second operation to make sure the complication doesn't happen for the other eye?

The use of a laser confuses me as well, but apparently it is the usual approach. As for avoiding a repetition, it seems unlikely. I am assured that it is a rare occurrence and unlikely to happen again, but that does not remove the concern from my mind.

I watched both my mother and my husband go through cataract surgeries and both said it was a breeze. Things today are so much easier than they used to be. I hope all goes really well for you, too! :)
