California Poppies are so easy to grow

Easy to grow and very colorful. Anne planted these in our back garden from seed and, though they took a while they finally bloomed very nicely. They reseed themselves, so we can expect many more next spring. This is the California state flower, and seem to grow wild there and in Oregon along the interstates. I was in the back the other day and took some flower photos to share. They look a bit beaten down now due to the rain, but will survive and bloom some more through at least May.

i wish i could grow poppies-my grandmother had some, but in 1977 the cops came up and ripped them out.she was SO angry. i guess they're illegal here now, just on the offchance they're opium bearing.

I fear those flowers because growing up we were told we'd go to jail if we'd ever pick them.

Pretty. And common here though I've only seen them in that orange color. I should plant some cause I am trying to grow anything that does not have a painful sticker on it.

Whenever I see a cluster of California poppies when I am horseback riding or driving down the road, they always make me smile. They are the perfect flower for our state!

@DeborahDiane that it is this year, after a terribly dry year in 2015. Did I hear that it rained there today?

They seed themselves here too and pop up all over the place. They are quite attractive I think.

When I was a kid, every expanse of dirt had California Golden Poppies growing on them each spring. But as I grew up, and the state dried up, there are now hard to find. If we get rain from time to time, other wildflowers show up long before the poppies. I miss them. But they are easy to grow. When I had a half acre in the hills, my neighbors and I broadcast wildflower seeds in our back 1/3 yard. The flowers were glorious.
