I thought I'd lost my knife! (a post about routines)

I got called in to work at the preschool this morning. When I got home, I noticed that my little Buck pocket knife wasn't in its usual place in my pocket. What not? Because I had gone to the Warriors-Blazers (basketball) game last night and had removed it, knowing I'd have to go through security at the game. So I looked in my usual "I'll leave this at home today" spot on my desk. It wasn't there. Where the heck was it? Only them did I remember that I hadn't taken the knife out of my pocket until I was at the BART (rapid transit) station in my truck. It had to be in my truck. And there it was. Have you noticed that losing/misplacing things is more common when there's a break in your routine? I rarely go to Warriors games. When I fly, I usually walk to the BART station and leave my pocket knife on my desk. Last night was a break in my routine. And I had to play Sherlock Holmes to find my little pocket knife.

That is true. Or when you become disorganized from being off your schedule. I hate to get disorganized.

This is why I try to never break a routine. So why is my coffee cup always missing?

I have several back-ups. But my main coffee cup is usually either at my desk or in the sink.

@ElizabethWallace But wouldn't that be a part of "the routine"?

Probably because you wanted to wash it.

Warriors won right? Yes i always misplace something or even forget something when there's a break in my routine and then I would get mad.

I think it even happens to younguns sometimes. I ran over my own bicycle in my 20s once because my bike-into-truck loading routine was unexpectedly interrupted.

Routines are important. They keep us from going crazy and also from using valuable space in our heads for silly things, like where we put our car keys.

Exactly. It sounds like you've studied some psychology. Ah yes. You're a retired teacher, aren't you?

@TheHorse Yes, secondary school. I taught teenagers for over 40 years. Mostly I taught German, French, English and some business administration to adults in college and the private sector. Psychology is a crucial skill in teaching.

My uncle lost his wallet few months. He panicked. He finally found it in his car door pocket.

Car door pocket. I often find "missing items" there.

There are lots of thins I do with what I call my automatic pilot. When that does not work, anything can happen.

That is surely true and it's happened a lot with worse finishes, but I can't remember particular ones right now. The last time this happened for me it was a year or so ago, so if I do remember I'll come back to share otherwise, none of us will ever know what it was.

Oh yes, I am much more likely to forget/misplace things when my routine is disrupted.

When Vince loses anything I always say 'where did you have it last' and the reply is always 'if I knew that I wouldn't be looking for it'. But it's a good way of finding things.

I am horrible at finding things. You may place it in front of me and I would still be blind to it. Misplacing things is common for me.

Yes, that is usually what leads me to things like locking keys in cars and such.

I'm the worst when there is a change in my routine. You'd think I was on the spectrum or maybe I am.
