Smelly But Heavenly!

They say it smells like rotten onions but juicy and tasty! It is called DURIAN. Durian is a fruit that abounds in the Philippines and other Southeast Asian countries. Sadly, I have not tasted it. Durian fruit reminds me of what our former neighbor back in the Philippines, an old Chinese casanova, said - "Melon amoy, pelo masalap!" (English translation: "Smelly but heavenly!") I heard lots of people don't eat durian fruit because of its pungent smell. But I am sure the offensive smell of this tasty fruit would not bother my nose. It is because back in the Philippines I used to eat tasty "tapa" (dried beef) and salty "bagoong" (anchovies/fish sauce). "Melon amoy, pelo masalap!" (Smelly but tastes heavenly!) Whew!

As I am staying in a Southeast Asia country, durian is very popular here. I have been eating this fruit since I was young, and durians are always everywhere when it's the durian season. I used to hate the smell, well, I still do not like the smell, but I agree that it tastes really good! I just have to brush my teeth many times and gurgle with lots of water after eating it.

I have seen those fruits only once in an Asian supermarket in Paris, I do not know how they taste and even how they smell. I like anchovies.

@antonbunot We eat anchovies in Italy. I like those that are canned in olive oil, they do not even smell bad. I also like rice, we eat rice in the north of Italy.

Durian has offensive smell that lingers, it can't be hidden that there are Durians around because the foul odor will disturb people. I don't eat Durian, not because of the odor but it just does not suit my taste. It does not taste like fruits, it tastes more of a dish lol.

I love durian . And i don't find the smell as offensive or bad smelling as others says . And i can relate with " Melon amoy , pelo masalap " because our father used to buy what we call here as" dinailan " It is a round shaped rubber like thing . But it is actually like a shrimp paste , salty . Just frying in a small amount of oil , a tablespoon of it will make house smell like a shrimp paste smells . But once you eat it with some pieces of chopped Thai chili and some calamansi juice , it will make you eat lots of rice because it is so tasty .

@SIMPLYD Dinailan? I read dinilaan . . . hehehe. So, I can conclude that "basta melon amoy, masalap!" like durian, dried beef tapa, bagoong (anchovies) . and . . I think that's all . . unless you know one more. . .

My mother loves durian. Hmmmm I am waiting for its price to drop. Hihihi last year, I had seen in Quiapo that it's sold at around 25 to 50 per kilo, but you have to buy the whole fruit, maybe more than 2kg per fruit. They will cut it open and put in a styro then wrap in cling wrap plastic. It's not that I don't like the fruit but it's the smell, the taste and the texture that I don't find appealing to my taste buds. Hahaha but I like it when it's candied or made into ice cream.
