New Zealand's Shortest Day of the Year

It's 6.30 a.m. Tuesday 21 June here, and very dark outside. Today is our shortest day of the year, it's hard to believe we've reached it already and that soon the length of the days will start increasing again. Meanwhile, I know the opposite is true for all the northern hemisphere readers, and you'll start experiencing shorter days. I'm off to work this morning, doing a couple of mornings teaching for my old school because they're desperate. I'm glad it's only mornings, as a friend is across from Australia and we're having lunch today. It's not the darkness in the mornings that I notice most these days, but I don't like the way it gets dark so early late afternoon in the winter. Thank heavens seasons change. Enjoy your longer days while summer is with you.

The very hot weather will only come after the first week of July. Today is sunny and a very pleasant temperature.

We're still having warm winter temps up around 20C, very unusual for this time of year.

@valmnz The past winter, has been the warmest since 185 years, we did not even see the snow this year and this is very unusual.

So that is pretty much the winter over. It will be all downhill from here onwards.

Not really, it may be the shortest day, but the really cold weather doesn't come until July.

I believe ours is the 22nd, the day my son was born. I could be wrong tho, A few years ago I met someone from USA and we had a solstice day together, it was very interesting

But, if you're like us, your warmth will continue for a while yet.

While I hate the heat and humidity of the summer, I love all the sunshine! I've been having a rough time sleeping and many nights I'm away all night long. So I do notice right now how short the darkness is! But I will definitely enjoy this every second. It just feels so good to have so much daylight.

It is 7:04 pm here on Monday June 20th here in Pennsylvania. It is still nice and bright outside. I was just out watering the flowers. It is the first day of summer today.

We've been finding it harder to get up as the mornings are so dark but all that will change soon. Saw a great NZ film last night Hunt for the Wilder People - mostly a comedy and great entertainment. I'm sure you'd enjoy it.

I am enjoying all of this daylight! School is about to end here and it seems I might not be called in for these last few days.

We're going towards the rainy season at our end, Ms. Val. We experienced those dark mornings to as late as 7AM when we were there in New Zealand last year :)
