A Bad Word

It has been a beautiful day. I've cleaned and done laundry so everything in our apartment is ship shape. I love a clean house. My better half had business to attend to today so I made good use of the day staying home. I had much rather clean when I'm alone. Everything runs smoother. Someone said something about words we can't use on Mylot. I was surprised when I used a common word that I hear all the time, that had no racial meaning to me. I used the word in a comment and the sentence came up saying "bad word" I finally figured out how the word could be used as a racial put down, but I've never heard it used that way. The word was sp - - ck. I meant it an in clean." sp- - ck and span". I didn't realize it would be an insult to anyone.

I've been caught with this one too but needed another MyLotter to explain what the word meant! I'd never heard it in any 'bad word' context.

@RubyHawk I guess some of these slang terms haven't made it to a dictionary yet. I had another strange one the other day but can't remember what it was.

@JudyE I had never heard it used in that context. We have always used it to mean clean. I wonder which meaning came first, clean or a slur.

@Judyev I just got out my American college dictionary and looked it up. It means clean, there is no mention of it being a slur on any race. I wrote down the exact definition, but the Fix bad Word came up. the dictionary has the words and gives the definition as clean, fresh. No mentions of slur or race.

That word actually to Hispanic people is the same as a racial expression people used to address black people.

@RubyHawk I know. That's how i use it too. But since mylot has a lot of members from different countries, the admin is careful with that.

I didn't know that and would never use any racial slur in any way. We always used it as a common word to mean clean.

@RubyHawk yeah I do not blame you at least it will tell you when you are trying to use a word it does not allow.

@Jdaw1985 Actually it's a good idea and keeps a discussion from being deleted.

This is the first site I've seen that tell you. Most times they just reject an article.

I and others around me have always used the word to mean ship shape, or extra clean. I've never heard it used in another way.

Ahh I have heard this word called towards others. I hate any kind of name calling so it makes me really mad when I have heard it said. I've come across words years ago that mylot didn't allow as well and had to come up with another word. I think it might have been this sam word as you whenI wrote about cleaning. I vacuumed the living room floor, couches and cat blankets before I sat down to mylot.

So, you have heard it as a slur to someone.?

I remember I tried to use that in a post once (about cleaning as well) and was surprised I couldn't use it! I didn't realize it was a racial slur (and I thought I heard them all), so I didn't think anything "racial" about it either.

I wonder if it has always been used as a slur or where the word came from. I've never heard it used in that way.

@RubyHawk It surprised me when I actually looked it up. Living where we do, there are many Hispanics - and I've personally never heard that word used before like that (but I've heard many others that to me sound worse). I suppose it's all in context . . . though usually the slurs are definitely slurs . . . this one just happens to have other meanings.

Something's wrong with the idiots in admin. I just tried it myself in a, now stricken answer, to your post and got the same result. If these morons can't tell the difference between a long used 'All American' expression equivalent to 'squeaky-clean' and a racial slur, they need to take night classes in English as a First Language. Oh, so, that means that, if I want to share with my fellow MyLotters the good deal I got on a certain box of soap powder, I can't mention the "brand-name"...?...What simpletons!

Isn't that the truth, as I just told Judy. I looked up the definition of the words sp --ck and span and there was no mention or slurs or race. just perfectly clean. We are getting too sensitive when we can't write common words that we use daily.

I've come across a couple of words - a female dog ( I can understand that one) and another word for laugh - snig ger.

one can't clean here when the hubs's home. disrupts his t.v., e'en if'n i'm jest dustin' 'n 'nother room'f the house. 'tis a bit'f a marvel what this thingy considers "bad words", i've run 'cross a few myself. e'en if'n ya drop the "k" it'll come'p 's "Error: Cannot post. Fix back words: sp**"

I got everything done quickly with the man out of the house. I usually go out when he does, but it sure is easier cleaning when I'm alone. Looks like I'll have to learn the words the site considers bad. I suppose words that are considered bad by some people are not recognized by others. Not by me, anyway.

I think I have gotten used to not using certain words on here because I get that pop up. I wouldn't remember such a word as being a bad word either.
