He was waiting for us in the grocery store. I could see his big, brown eyes staring vacantly down the aisle. Right. At. Us. My breath caught in my throat as I mentally urged him to go another direction. No luck. He spotted the baby and moved closer. Without a word, he stopped by our cart and raised his hands to his massive mouth, pretending to be bashful. It was all just an act. An excuse to get close and scare the poo out of my youngest son. Fortunately, he spotted better prey coming up behind me. A mother with twin daughters. I took the opportunity and escaped. Fred Bear waved forlornly at my son and then shuffled off to entertain a new audience. Does anyone else feel...uncomfortable...when Fred Bear makes his appearance at the store?

I am very grateful that we do not have anything like this where I live.

@Genipher The salaries are too high here in Switzerland to pay someone to try to make it fun for kids.

I get that they're trying to make it "fun" for the kids but, more often than not, it just scares them. I just want to do my shopping and get out!

We do not have anything like this. I know when I was involved with giving out samples one lady told me she did not like that. She wanted me to pretend she was not there. It may be the same kind of discomfort.

I'm always thinking, "Please don't look at me! Please don't look at me! when those "characters" walk by. They're usually drawn to the kids and since I often have them with me....

I can't remember ever coming across a store with this type of promotion but yes, I'd probably feel uncomfortable.

@Genipher I am never seen a bear in the grocery store where I go. I have also never heard of Fred Bear.
