Our daily dinner guest!

United States
August 4, 2016 12:43pm CST
This little lady shows up each and every evening, the same time daily. She is very cautious as she comes down the hill. She is our dinner guest every day! My husband feeds the deer. We go through tons of deer corn that is purchased just for them. This little lady will stand at the top of the hill and wait for my husband to put out the corn. She is extremely sensitive to her surrounds, and even a little wind blowing in her direction will scare her off. But on most evenings she ventures down and eats her corn one piece at a time, as dainty as can be. She takes her sweet time. I was able to get a few photos of her - she knew I was watching. Unfortunately, I raised the camera up at the exact moment she looked up and that was it - off she went. I came inside and watched, she made her way back and finished the corn! She is just one of many who we feed. If she gets here first and eats it all, then my husband puts our more for the others. Photo is mine.

She is lovely, even the most shy animals know where they can go and be safe. I buy two 10 pound bags of seeds each month for the birds. I cannot believe how much they can eat.

@AbbyGreenhill I have put the feeders on the edge of the woods in front of us, I am glad that they go poop in the woods.

@LadyDuck It's bad enough when they pooped in the pool, but I was always waiting for them to poop on my head!

We stopped feeding the birds in summer, they can find their own meals...plus it stops them from pooping all around the pool!

We have two doe each with a fawn...they don't come out at the same time - one has an almost brand new fan and the other is a little older and bigger than Ruby. It's fun to watch them run!

@Jessicalynnt They usually hang with the moms for a few years...then the males take off and make new lives while the females hang in the same where they were born.

@AbbyGreenhill growing up we had a mamma who had twins every year, or every other or something. Often the older set would still be with her when the newest set appeared, was so stinking cute

We are going to have some added to the usually amount we have come down from the foot hills here. Since we had this fire up by Lucky Peak I am sure there will be some distressed deer this year. We usually have a few come down but this year will be different.

We don't know for sure how many are in the woods, but we can see the hoof prints and there are thousands of them - some huge ones so big bucks. But they don't come out during the day. We tell our deer just stay in our yard you'll be safe.

Sometimes she comes with her mother, but the mom pushes her out of the way!

I love deer. There are a lot of them on the road to Borges Ranch, where I take the kids I work with to pet the goats and sheep (and chickens). They're pretty tame there. I think many of the neighbors there do what you do. Some of the kids I work with had never seen a live deer before. I always slow down (if we're in my truck) so they can get a good look. Sometimes I get honked at, but not usually. People understand.

Its hard to imagine people never seeing one but I know there are. Like when I lived in Hawaii and our landlord's teenage sun kept questioning me about snow - he had never seen it. He wanted to visit the mainland in winter to see it. That was in the early 70's I hope he got to see snow!

@JohnRoberts - she sure does and she takes advantage of that. @TheHorse - but what she doesn't know is the man feeding her hunted his entire life until we moved south - her distant cousins are hanging on the walls.

Yep. I wonder if she'll get less shy over time as she realizes Abby is not a predator.

@AbbyGreenhill Heh. Maybe she can sense that. "Why is a 3-D photo of great-great-uncle Filbert hanging on their wall?"

Such practice can become quite demanding, but definitely very worthwhile.

One thing I miss since we moved to the city is having the deer visit us. I used to enjoy photographing them. I'd have to do it with a zoom from a distance since like your deer they would run away if I got too close.

She lives in our woods and won't venture too far. I worry more about them crossing the road.

How cute! I haven't seen any deer at my place lately but I still have 18 raccoon's, 3 squirrels and a multitude of birds that get fed daily @AbbyGreenhill .
