Cutting Fabrics

I don't have a picture of what I am doing until I am done, so I went to pixabay and picked one with the sewing tag for this post. What started out as me gathering a few materials to cut for some string blocks has turned into more. Why not? While cutting for the string blocks I may as well cut the left over fabrics into 5 inch squares, strips, etc as well instead of throwing the leftovers back into the scrap drawers. This is a slow process, especially while being on the computer at the same time. I think I will end up titling my WIP Wednesday post this week something like "some weeks are just for cutting" I do plan to get my machine out once I get this cutting done. I ordered a package of cotton batting with some of my amazon credit. It will come in tomorrow, giving me more cutting to do. Tuesday is sewing club all day at church, so it really looks like it will be Wednesday before the machine comes out. Yes, you read it right at the beginning of the post---I am starting yet another project when I already have so many others in the works. I follow a blog called soscrappy. each month she has a new color. We are to make things with this color with our scraps. Along the way she gives us instructions for blocks, but I don't use those. I've been wanting to do the colors in a string quilt for a long time. It's just that I am only now getting to it. What are you up to this Sunday?

so glad'ja got'cha some battin' comin', hon. hopefully that'll get'cha geared to completed somethin', lol. i jest dunno how ya do 't, 've so many projects tauntin' ya day'n/day out. reckon i ought to go check out that soscrappy thingy 'n see how much trouble i can get 'nto. 're 5" squares yer standard? i jest finished 'p the braids fer my current lap quilt. takin' a break from such 'n then'll tackle the top 'n pockets. cut the fleece fer the back, pin't together fer now 'n await the return 'f my machine so's i can get't quilted...'long with the other'un that's sittin''n a zippy thingy. i hope 't'll not be long 'fore my machine's fixed, 'r i order a darnin' needle fer the one i'm currently usin'. the thoughts 'f 6 quilts sittin' 'round waitin' to be completed sends horrors through my head. but, once i get the this'un 's far's i can, i'll no doubt start'n the next. jest the fabric sittin' there waitin' drives me a bit nuts, lol.

I wish I was near you to teach me how to do the braided. She showed us at the meeting, which prompted me to buy the pattern and ruler but I didn't take any pictures. I've slept way too many times since then. I just checked out a book from our guild's library that is patterns for quilts that are all made with 5 inch squares. I haven't picked any patterns yet to copy to hopefully make. Originally my box of 5 inch squares started because that is what is used to make the coasters.

@crazyhorseladycx The book has patterns I won't try at all, but a few I would like to. I would have drawers of 5 inch squares to use if I start cutting all of my scraps into more usable pieces.

@marsha32 i wish we lived close 'nough, too, hon. i actually learnt how to make 'em through a youtube video. i'd no half hex so's the hubs made me one outta some sorta board. he makes all my templates. goofy me though, i rarely recall to tell him the cuttin' size 'n wind 'p with the finished sized, lol. so, i jest punt'n make't work anyhow :) i reckon ya could take those 5" 'rs, make a row, slice 'em 'p'n call't a 9 patch?? search me, i'm purty much pattern illiterate. find 'em most frustratin', particularly those'uns fer clothes that make no sense.

You are so talented to be able to manage all those projects at one time. I didn't do much of anything yesterday. My brother finished his packing for his trip today.

@simone10 I take a tone of notes. If I don't make myself a note (and then not lose it) then it won't get done.

@marsha32 I used to be great at multi-tasking but the older I get it gets more difficult.

I haven't sewn much over the last few years. I used to enjoy it but my fingers and eyesight are not the best anymore. Nice that you have a sewing project to keep you busy

All of my quilting friends are many years older than me. Many of them no longer do any of the hand sewing due to their hands, and they send their quilts off to be quilted. I just don't see how people afford to do that!

@marsha32 I would imagine that it would be expensive to have quilts quilted. But, it certainly sounds like a fun project for you

I made simple quilts for my 4 children and 7 grandchildren when I first learned. They used them because I made them....some until the point of wearing out. I should really make more for my family over making them just because I am in hopes of selling them.

You have always been so good at crafts. I can probably get into it too, but just too much on my plate, trying to survive...to have time to enjoy it.

@teresatrotter It would have been so expensive to ship with the weight too. I've had others offer to send me fabric in the mail but I didn't do it because of the cost.

Maybe that's a good reason to find some sort of hobby that you do enjoy. I am very blessed that so many think of me when they clean out their sewing rooms and give me fabrics. If I had to buy them I would be sunk. I do buy some things that I can't really afford, but oh well.

@marsha32 - I once had a ton of fabrics I could have sent you. But since I have lost everything, I no longer have anything materialistic to give.

Well, I have not gotten to any sewing. We got home from church after 12:30. Bob fixed the hamburgers, I made cheesy cauliflower. I have been online, and then I took a nap that was way longer than I meant it to be. Must have needed it as they say.

String blocks? What are those? Are they a form of quilting pattern?

yes, it's a quilting technique. I will show a finished one here in a post once I get one done. I plan on doing a tutorial with pictures on blogbourne at some point too.

It sounds like you are starting another interesting project! I have always been working on a new project though I have a few in hand. I attended a lunch event together with my family, had some fun. I have not been doing any handwork lately, hope I will start a new project soon.

It's fun and a motivation to get scraps used up. I do it for a few months then let myself be too busy to get to it, then do it another few months.
