Looks like I might be going to prison

...or something like that...maybe just sued for a gazillion dollars. You see, I got this call from the I.R.S. (right) saying I may be held liable in a lawsuit (they didn't say what for) and I needed to call this number RIGHT NOW and give them all this information. Right. So I called the number, and they asked for my name. I said 'Well you already know my name, you called me and told me to call this number, so what's up?" And they said 'Well yeah, but this is confidential information and I have to make sure who I am talking to.' And I said "Well you're talking to me...so who am I?" And he started in about how I needed to supply my name so they could verify it was me. And my reply was "Bull----". To make a long story short, they got mad and hung up when I said I was reporting the number that called me to the authorities. But now I have to sit and wait because I know the I.R.S. (right) will be calling the cops to have me arrested any time now.... Maybe I need to call them back again. (EDIT: They won't answer their phone now )

Dontcha' just love those calls @JolietJake ? I love to play with them and give them some of their own medicine. caller: what's your SS #? me: what's yours? caller: what's your name? me: what's yours? Then I'll start singing (which I'm horrible at). They hang up. OR caller: what's your name? me: Mary Jones. caller: what's your SS#? me: 123-45-6789. OR I'll speak in a foreign language that's not really a language. Do you remember Pig Latin? caller: what's your name? me: ary May ones Jay. caller: do you speak English? me: ot nay oday tay.

@nanette64 I got a call from *cough*cough* Windows telling me my machine was infected. I asked him his mother knew what he was doing. He said yes. "And she approves?" "Oh, you're so clever. Well you can just ef off." He didn't say ef. I just hung up at that point. But I figured: Hey, you call MY house, you lie to ME, and you get abusive when I don't believe your lies? YOU go ef yourself...

@JolietJake It is amazing how many people fall for it though, seriously do we all think that we are on the IRS hit list? Seriously, we are small potatoes.

We had one of these calls waiting when we got back from our time away. We haven't rung them though so perhaps we'll go to prison too.

You should call them as often as possible. While you're wasting their time, they aren't scamming some other poor schnook.

Bummer! You're going to the slammer! Well, always wanted to bake a cake with file in it. How do you rate getting a live person? We just get recordings. And they're not even from the THE I.R.S. They're from IRS, who've apparently been trying to reach us for a while. It's imperative we call right now at this #. I never wait long enough for the number. I'm too busy emailing this guy from Nigeria who's in a tight spot and just needs a little to tide him over. Then we'll be rich. Until then, I think I'll take an option on a used bridge in Brooklyn, good condition...

@JolietJake There's a whole folklore to the scam. It goes way back, originally referred to as the Spanish prisoner. The Nigerians raised it to an art form with the advent of email, but really, no one has surpassed the Russians. For a while there, I was winning enough money in the U.K. lottery to buy several small islands. And I kept getting notices—by email—that I had court appearances due in Florida.

I've wondered why so much scam stuff comes from Nigeria...probably 80% of the emails I have got about that stuff come from there

So many different phone scams nowadays. I always wonder about people who may be just paid employees of the biggest scammers, especially overseas. Do they know what sort of organisations they are working for or do they genuinely believe that they have a legitimate telesales job?
