A Chamberlain in a Car-Park

I wrote recently about our visit to the Pinnacles in Western Australia. In the car-park was an orange Chamberlain tractor which seemed a bit out of place among the RVs and motor-homes. One particular Chamberlain tractor has a very interesting history. The first Chamberlain Champion Model Tractor was produced in Welshpool, Western Australia, in 1955. As a promotional and demonstration vehicle, this first model was modified to have a top speed of around 60mph. Its first task was to follow cars competing in the Redex Reliability Trial which went round Australia. The tractor assisted cars which got into trouble, usually through becoming bogged, between Darwin and Perth. In 1956, the tractor again supported competitors in the Redex Trial. In 1957 the Trial became the Mobilgas Round Australia Rally but the tractor was not allowed to compete in its own right. However it became the 'sweep vehicle' meaning once all the cars had left a checkpoint the tractor could commence the next section. During the trial, the tractor often towed cars into checkpoints or towns after they became immobile for whatever reason. At around this time the tractor was given the name of 'Tail-End Charlie'. With towing and recovery trips, the tractor clocked up 11,140 miles (18,000kms) in 19 days. Tail End Charlie is now residing in a Tractor Museum in Whiteman Park, Western Australia. A replica tractor has made several re-enactment trips raising money for charity. Vin spoke to the owner of the Chamberlain in the car-park and discovered the lady travelling with him was an old friend from our Ravensthorpe days. The pair were on their way to a gathering of Chamberlains in a nearby town. Along the way we occasionally met up with people we knew.

I saw a strange vehicle today too. It was some sort of farm machine but was not a combine. It was an odd thing.

WA is isolated in a way from the rest of Oz by the Nullarbor Plain. We get plenty of tourists from the east but it wouldn't be as easy as popping across borders in the US.

Wow! That's great info on the Chamberlain. It's great you found you knew the owner and were also able to meet other people you knew on your trip.

@JudyEv I'm sure you had a lot of catching up when you did recognize each other.

It had been years since we'd seen the person and none of us recognised each other immediately.

There are clubs here for all the different tractors - as I'm sure there is in the US. My brother did up a few old tractors including a John Deere. I know some parts for it had to come from the US.

@Ronrybs Haha. Yes, you're right. I wouldn't want to have a confrontation with it!

They were made in WA and probably weren't exported.

What an interesting vehicle. Wouldn't it be fun to catch a ride on one just for the fun of it?

Now I understand why the Chamberlain tractor was on the road, they were reaching a gathering of Chamberlains.

It's odd how we often find people we know when we travel away from home. Interesting about the tractor - just looking at it, it would be quite an operation getting that spare tyre down if it was needed.

That's true. It would be worse than our bus tyres which can be a bit tricky.

I wonder, is that tractor used like a motor home? or was it being moving from one place to another

Quite possibly they were never exported. A collective noun - a shedful? a crop?

Yes thanks. Life is good. Boys seem to naturally gravitate to machinery, don't they? However we had a 4 1/2 year old visit the other day and he had a doll. I was able to crochet a little jerkin for it while he was here but I couldn't put sleeves in as 'Lucy' had to go to bed with him. I guess it's a bit unusual but he was so caring and gentle with the little doll. He thinks his Mum should have a baby even if Dad is a bit old perhaps!
