A Lot of Lab Love

Yesterday our friends arrived with their lab, Winston. He is one big boy at II8 pounds. He found out rather fast that he couldn't keep up with Ruby. He tried a few times, but she was too much for him. She wasn't all that interested him, she was more anxious to play with the kids in the pool.
We tried and tried to get him in the pool, but only managed to coax him down two steps - he wasn't impressed, but he sure kept an eye on Ruby when she was swimming.
Ruby never stopped swimming or running around for 5 hours and after they left my husband and I went in the pool for a while and Ruby had another round of swimming.
We all slept good last night and we sure had one pooped lab - but today she is ready to go again.
Photo is mine - Ruby and Winston

What a dog! I wonder if Winston was around the water a little and saw Ruby enjoying it more that she wouldn't get in also. Dogs usually take to water naturally.

@AbbyGreenhill .....Likes he's on a sedative all the time, huh? I have known dogs like that. A lot of dogs just take to the water naturally. Maybe labs are different. Or is he a Retriever?

Winston is so laid back I don't think he cares if he plays too much or not LOL. He sorta panicked when he went to the second step and got a little wet. If he had a pool all his life it would be different, maybe. Ruby on the other had has been swimming in a big pool since she was 8 weeks old. She actually swims under water if a toy sinks she goes down after it.

@celticeagle He's a lab, just a big big one - English type. The bigger you are the harder it is to move, same with dogs, especially if they have not been exercised much since a pup.

@AbbyGreenhill I used to loan my pom to a friend, her son liked dogs, and she used the pom as a behavior reward, if he earned it, they got to borrow dog and go to the park for a couple hours,. he'd come back TIRED. and sleep like a rock for hours, was funny

@AbbyGreenhill I think that this is the first time that hear about a dog not interested in splashing in the water.

@LadyDuck Me too - I think maybe if Tony had gone in he might have then. I was told he is limping now, I think he hurt his leg when he jumped into their vehicle to go home

He is a different breed of labs compared to our Ruby - they are often called 'blockhead labs' they are a lot heavier than a regular lab and much more slow moving. I have a friend whose sister breeds them and my friend had several of them over the years - none of them really cared to play or run - just a nice slow walk was all they wanted. Their vet says he is the right weight.

They have a pool, but its above ground and since he can't climb a ladder he's never been in one. Maybe next year. Ruby had a blast.

What fun, if my grand-dogs were there they would be swimming, not watching too...

In a way we are glad he didn't go in - he shed so much just laying on the cement I can only imagine what the pool would have looked like.

Pretty pups. My daughter and her friends with dogs set up doggie play dates. They all seem to get along okay so far.

These are friends who live in NY but bought a home not far from us for when they retired. So they come down every few months for a week - this was the first trip with the dog.

Poor ole Winston! Sounds like Ruby had a blast though. They are beautiful dogs. Labs have always been a favorite of mine. They are so easy going and a great family dogs.

Easy going and very people friendly. She was more interested in the people than in the dog.
