Where have all the hippies gone..."long time passing"

I was listening to the Pete Seeger/Joe Hickerson song “Where have all the flowers gone” the other night (Peter, Paul & Mary version) and tonight the thought occurred to me, where did all the hippies go? (Once upon a time, you dressed so fine, didn’t you?”) Oops, that old Dylan line crept in somehow. Well, I wondered where they all went, those Flower Children of the 1960s and early ‘70s. How many ended up as corporate vice-presidents with a comfortable retirement? I suppose many of them died young though, drugs, alcohol, and more now of old age. Maybe some gave up and went middle-class with two kids and picket fence? Many descend on our area in July for the Oregon Country Fair, a real throwback to those days of yore. I am hoping that some are alive and well, still clinging to the ideals that led them into that life style. I am not sure he was a real hippie, but Chris Kimball, host of America’s Test Kitchen, followed the Grateful Dead around the country (as many “deadheads” did) and turned out well. Near Mapleton, Oregon, (about 20 miles from the Pacific Ocean) there is the Alpha Farm, a commune existing since 1972 and doing okay, it seems. They used to have a coffee shop and bakery in that little town that I would stop in sometimes. It was like stepping back into time. The Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco is a high rent district now, though the streets are shifty at night and littered with panhandlers daytimes. Know any old hippies or were you one? I could have passed at one time with my red beard and longish hair after the army, but was way too middle class. Here is a link to the Alpha Farm website if you want to know about a current working commune. http://members.pioneer.net/~alpha/

I was just bemoaning the dearth of communal living situations for retired musicians the other day--seems like that wuld be a great way to live communally

@JamesHxstatic I don't know--I was talking to colleagues about it, so we all happen to be classical musicians, but I suspect that is more of a lifestyle issue than a music genre issue--we are all a little older, practice, perform, and exercise

@divalounger Hollywood has a wonderful home for aging retired actors and others from the film business.

I suspect that would be good. Would there be a need for music genre segregation?

You live in Oregon, and you have to ask that question? Heck, they all moved up to Washington and Oregon. Whenever I've been up there to visit, it felt like the sixties to me with all the beads, long skirts, hippie shirts and peasant blouses.

Hence the link to to commune site. But there are only about 20 people there usually they say. We probably have more than a lot of places, but northern CA is a haven as well.

@JamesHxstatic You keep coming up with reasons for us to move West. You want to help us when we pack up?

I suspect that the west coast (left coast) harbors a lot of those still around.

Life goes on and as you say, 60s hippies are now seniors and passing on. Dylan is up there in age.

@JamesHxstatic What's scary is when we realize our own age! Joan Baez is also 75.

I am an old hippie so that is where one went. LOL I remember seeing a picture of the odd artwork Janis Joplin had created on her porch there in San Francisco. A lot of memories.

I hung out at Haight-Ashbury for a little while. Then, I discovered I had to get a job. Reality kicked in and I guess I chose the boring way. It was fun hanging out for that time, though. I did wear a flower in my hair and hung with the folk music crowd.

I am sure my hubbyand I was called that more than once. We did not live in a commune. We did all kinds of stuff to survive. A good buddy of ours I am sure could be called a hippie. Eric is just a good guy. A distracted scientist and eccentric to the point of insanity.

We have a friend (male) called Dixie and his brother is called Sunshine. Their surname is Joy. I'm pretty sure their parents would have been hippies!

I'm way too young to have been around the time of the hippies, (sorry for making that sound like a million years ago), but I kind of wish that I was around at that time. Now all I can do is hope to embody some of their life style to hopefully recreate the hippie life style now.

Good luck with that. The idea of peace and love espoused back then seems hard to put together in this world we live in.

Right here in my heart, my friend. But I am into the comforts of home, not commune type living, so I guess I was always basically your middle class girl. I still have the same principles as far as social justice, peace, and everything to do with that.

I was never a hippy. I guess I could have been one. I was a young man in the late 60s and early 70s. But being raised in a Seventh-day Adventist home may have been the reason why I didn't go that route. Or maybe like you, just too middle class.
