Have You Ever Ridden on a Subway in a Big City? The only subway I have ever been on is in New York City years ago. We rode the subway all the way out to Coney Island and then back into the city to Rockefeller Center to see the show with the Rockettes. I had never been on a subway before and have not been on one since. It was quite an experience. The New York City subway system opened in 1904 we were told and there are over 700 miles of track? It’s amazing to think that is all underground in New York and it’s kind of scary to think that on top of the ground thousands of tons of buildings stand on this very system. The only other underground experience I’ve had is Underground Atlanta, Georgia. We shopped in the many shops and had dinner at a restaurant that had alligators in a pond. That was years ago too, but quite an experience to think that all that activity was going on underground. Have you ever been there? Many other cities in the world have underground train systems. Have you ever ridden on any of them?

I rode the subway frequently in New York City both when I was going to nursing school in Manhattan and traveled back & forth each day and then in later years when we would go into the city for a day out.

@IreneVincent if you live in a big city then it's pretty much the quickest way to travel

@Marilynda1225 I'm sure you are correct about that. I'm glad I don't live in a big city. I live South of Richmond, Virginia, but far enough away that I can say I live on a country road. I live near a small town also, and I like that.

I have traveled the New York subway, the above ground metro in Minneapolis, Underground Atlanta, Bart system in the San Francisco bay area and the metro here in my LA home town. Plus I have ridden the London Underground, Paris Metro and Rome train.

I'm finding out from this post that there are underground systems in a lot of different cities that I didn't know about. I find myself wondering how these systems were built. Before or after the city was built??? It's amazing that all these underground systems are there under the ground.

Strangely enough, no I haven't! I might be scared on them, not used to crowds really anymore. But it might feel more like an adventure.

I didn't find it scary but both undergrounds I went on were very hot and humid. I didn't like that. The underground in london can get VERY crowded at peak times but off peak it's fine.

It was an adventure for me. I've just been on the subway that one time to Coney Island. It was an interesting experience, but I'm not likely to do it again. I'm not afraid but I don't think I will be traveling anywhere soon where I would have the opportunity to ride a subway.

I know that you are a world traveler, so I'm sure that you have been on lots of underground systems. Me, not so much. I hope you are doing well.

We've been on a few now in our travels. I remember some of the escalators going down to the various platforms were very steep and very long. That's 'moving stairs' escalators, not lifts. Not sure what they're called there.

Yes, escalators is the right word here. I've not experienced that myself. It's amazing what is underground in some cities. It makes me wonder how these underground systems were built. Were they built before or after the city was constructed and how in the world could that be accomplished.

My first ride on a subway ever was in The Montreal Subway decades ago. Then, after I moved to Toronto, it became a daily thing for me to be on the subway to go to work and go out. Just wrote a little post about a book I just read about 2 subways.

I grew up in New Jersey so I have been to New York City many times. The greatest subway I have ever been to was in Leningrad Russia. I was there when I was 20 years old as I worked on cruise ships in the beauty salon. The subway was beautiful and so clean. I was amazed.

No subway in my part of the world. If there is, I'd go for it in a heaetbeat....
