Is It Going To Be A “Three Dog Night” Winter?

Summer is almost over. Even though the first day of autumn doesn’t start until September 22, most people consider Labor Day the end of summer. With that in mind I started thinking about winter. I know we still have autumn, but our cold days usually start before December 21, the first day of winter. So today I was wondering if this winter is going to be a “three dog night” winter. For those who don’t know, a three dog night is a very cold night. It is my understanding that on cold nights Eskimos would sleep with their Huskies in order to stay warm. Hence, on the very cold nights they would sleep with three dogs so it’s known as a three dog night. Huskies have so much fur that they are very comfortable in the cold. In fact they prefer cold weather. I’m not saying I want a three dog night winter, I’m just thinking about winter and getting my mind set for it. Now a little music for the band Three Dog Night:

I'm in Southern CA, summer is definitely not almost over . I don't know that we would ever experience a three dog night here . . . but definitely a three digit day!

@RichardMeister Wow - you didn't have any 3 digit days this summer? Although it's supposed to be a cooler weekend here, otherwise we're steadily in the high 90s - and currently it's super humid. I would love to see 70s in the forecast or better yet rain (no such luck).

@much2say Right now it's 59º here and is supposed to get up in the low 80s. They are forecasting a good deal of rain here on Friday. I was outside this morning in short sleeves and it sure felt nice.

Most likely there will never be a three dog night in southern California. Talking about three digit days, this summer we did not have any three digit days. I think the hottest it got here this summer was 98º. A lot nicer than last summer when we had several days that got to 100º and hotter. A cold front is moving in, so things are going to cool down. It's forecasted for a high of 66º on Friday.

We say the same thing about our indigenous people - that they sleep with 1, 2 or 3 dogs depending on how cold it is.

I wondered if other cultures did the same.

@JudyEv I wouldn't think it would get that cold in the jungle.

@RichardMeister Quite possibly - but maybe some isolated jungle communities have a three-monkey night. :)

I'm hoping for a milder winter than last year. We had pipes freeze right after Christmas, we had snow at the house until late February. I don't like the highs below freezing and I'm not looking forward to those days. I think I still have a couple months before I really need to worry about that.

I understand. Been there. No fun having frozen pipes.

I love Joy To The World by Three Dog Night. How interesting! Now I have heard what a three dog night is. Very neat! I hate winter because I loathe the cold! I consider summer over when my kids go back to school which was August 23.

@RichardMeister I saw on facebook that the farmers almanac is predicting a real bad winter this year.

Good song. After Christmas winter can end for all I care. The kids here start back to school tomorrow August 31.

@shaggin They just talked a bit about the winter here on the news tonight. They said they were sure as if yet if we will have a bad winter but they think we are going to have a lot of snow.

Sounds like just about every winter night here. I am dreading it. The winter months seem so long and cold. There is nothing I like about it.

I've always said, and believe, I could not stand Christmas in a hot climate. That is about the only thing I like about winter. The way I look at it is once Christmas is over then all the snow and cold weather can disappear.

@Happy2BeMe I can understand that. Not everyone likes a white Christmas.

I love that song so much LOL. Always makes me happy! Our winters aren't bad here. It doesn't even snow every year. But when it does, the town kinda stops haha. Nobody is really ready for it. We just stay home and play in it. We do get freezes though on occasion and have to wrap the outdoor pipes. People don't always remember.

I have always liked that song, too. I had been listening to a lot of Carpenters lately and just wanted something a little more joyful. Yes, I know California is s good place to go if one wants to get out of the cold. Years ago I used to housesit for an older retired couple while they went off to Arizona for the winter.

I don't know and I don't even want to think about that ,lol I don't mind a little bit of snow and even a little bit of cold but it's the brutally cold temperatures and ice that I can't deal with. I hope this is a mild winter.

You're funny. You call yourself WinterRea and AutumnSnow and then you say you don't even want to think about winter. After seeing what you call yourself I expected you would be giving winter both thumbs up. Well, I'm really hoping for a mild winter as well with lots of snow in the mountains (to save us for a summer drought).
