A weekend at the coast

Southport coat of arms

Due to a series of ongoing hospital appointments I rarely manage to take a holiday these days, although I am expecting that to change next month. Meanwhile, I find it quite boring to stay at home for long periods, so I try to take short breaks for a change of scenery. Tomorrow I plan on travelling over to Southport for the weekend. This is not a great distance from my home, but being a seaside resort it should make a pleasant change. It is so long since I last visited Southport that I cannot even remember it very well.

When I was a child Southport was popular for day trips and visits to floral gardens etcetera. Nowadays it has become popular among the older generation.

@LadyDuck Is this the same place that I know as San Remo?

@paigea Some people probably do the same in reverse. The change to what we encounter every day is the attraction.

@Asylum funny, I drive into the nearby city to walk along nice nature trails. Out here in the country I just have a flat, dusty, gravel road.

Hmm haven't you been away 3 times this year? I guess you are way down on your normally yearly quata

@kevin1877uk My next appointment is 20th of this month to have my last cataract operation assessed. Assuming that the result is favourable, I can order prescription glasses and return to normal.

I have been away 4 times so far this year, but the last one was way back in July. Since then I have only managed weekend breaks. Hopefully I can make up for lost time once the hospital scenario is over.

@Asylum Slacking due to the hospital intervention, not good, you've have to say something about it to them.

I love the seaside and we are certainly due for a few days there. It is only an hour's drive, but Anne is getting ready for a Studio Art Quilters' conference and we must wait until that is over.

I have bought rail tickets, but Southport is not far and the train will only take one and a half hours to reach there.

@JamesHxstatic It is fine for moderate distances, but British Rail is very expensive for lenghty journeys.

The hurricane put an end to our plans of traveling north to visit Cedar Key. It is apparently pretty torn up after a direct hit. I've been wanting to see it since I came here. I love living by the sea.

The seaside can be a very pleasant place during dry weather, but not when the rains appear.

@Asylum It could have been a hurricane. But at least my visitors have another full week and then some for the sun to make an appearance.

It must be nice to have holidays. I can't recall the last time I have had one. Probably at least three years. We used to go to the Oregon coast here. Very nice and serene. Saw a pod of whales the last time. Or sometimes up in the mountains to a small resort town.

I quite like Southport, though it's a few years since I've been there. We are visiting the Suffolk coast for a few days, the week after next. Not far for us to go either.

@MALUSE well from my house to any side of the continent and the shores is about 1200km so its always a long drive. I love the sea and would visit it every week-end if I lived even 100km away. Maybe Barry will tell us how far it is to the shores.
