We took a little trip yesterday

United States
September 16, 2016 7:58am CST
We decided to head to Cleveland, Tennessee, which is about an hour south of us. It's a big deal for me to want to be on Interstate-75 - I hate the trucks and I also hate the idiots who go 90 mph and swerve in and out from one lane to the other. Oh well...it wasn't fun going - too many trucks and we were in the middle of them. Coming home in the afternoon was much better, less traffic. First we stopped at Publix, our favorite grocery store. We didn't 'need' anything but wanted a few things and we found what we wanted. From there we went to our favorite lunch spot - City Cafe Deli. It's close to my doc's office and we also go there for lunch after my doc appointments. My next appointment is in October and I didn't feel like waiting until then. My husband got his favorite pastrami on rye with cole slaw and fries. I got roast beef on white with lettuce. I 'traded' in my cole slaw and fries for a small dinner salad instead. We both brought home a half sandwich, which we ate for dinner followed by some of the sweets we got at Publix. We still had out pool time and later our leftovers. I nice diversion and we enjoyed it - except for the trucks LOL. Photo is mine.

My husband loves the Pastrami, but this is not something that you can find in Switzerland. I am always surprised to see the quantity of meat that you have in your sandwiches, this is a serious sandwich, not what you buy in Europe.

@AbbyGreenhill This is what I do, because a sandwich at a bar or a restaurant costs around 10$ and you hardly see the meat inside.

This is the only place you can buy a sandwich so big. There are a few sub shops (horrible stuff) but the only way to get a decent sandwich is to buy good cold cuts and make it at home (or go to this place.

Nice to get out occasionally, huh? I remember one time years ago. I was on the freeway coming home alone. Had just learned to drive a 4 speed. Here I was on the freeway with big semis in front, back and the side of me. I was a nervous wreck.

@AbbyGreenhill .....My uncle is gone now but, I recall as a kid he was always the designated driver when Grams went anywhere. He always took the back roads for this very reason. I think it is well worth a trip taking a little longer rather than put up with jerks, weird looking people and big trucks on the freeway.

@celticeagle I think the world around me should be glad I don't drive - I leave it all to my husband, but you know for sure that I pick out the route LOL - I am a really good backseat driver. I like the backroads and we can make that trip on them. But the trucks don't seem to phase my husband and he doesn't speed, never did.

I wish there were dedicated truck lanes...although they are supposed to stay in the 'slow' lanes, they never do and they get right on your bumper....and so many of the drivers are smoking or on cell phones going 90 mph....some are very scary looking but that's a different topic

They don't have dark bread, just white, rye or sourdough. He didn't care for the pickle, too vinegary. The ones our friends brought him from NY from a Kosher pickle guy are not in vinegar and he's loving them but they do have a ton of garlic.

Sounds fun! Is it a long trip from your neck of the woods? I'm not a fan of driving near trucks either, btw.

If it weren't for trucks we'd be more willing to travel more and further.

that does seem like a sandwich in which one could eat half and have a whole other meal later!

I'm glad you had a sweet day in spite of that traffic. You describe my distress as I got us safely through Portland. I hae it, too but probably will have to be brave again next year.

We stopped going to the coast for vacations in order to avoid the crazy drivers in Atlanta, GA.

@AbbyGreenhill We are going to Charleston next Spring. I made sure we booked a motel near the historic downtown. I refuse to rent a car. Its either walk, bus or taxi!
