Getting blood out of a turnip is easier than....

....getting money that is owed to you from a relative. Seriously.
My MIL died almost a year ago and while she didn't leave much to my husband she did leave him her final monthly pension check from the State of New Jersey. We are only talking a few hundred dollars.
We received the paperwork last January, completed it and returned it to the State. They were to ask the estate to refund that final payment and when it was received they would cut a check to my husband. Simple enough.
Knowing how long the these things take I waited six months before checking with New Jersey. But before I did that my husband asked the executor of the will (his brother) if the money had been returned. The answer was a definite yes.
That gave me the info I needed to call New Jersey but I will not ever sit on hold for 45 minutes for anyone. I finally found a form online where I could ask for help. Two weeks later I got a response. Two weeks was a fast turn-around time LOL.
I was told that as of that date the money had never been returned to the State. They suggested I contact the attorney for the estate. I called the attorney and was told that had nothing to do with her (a very rude response plus she hung up on me.) I asked the nice lady in New Jersey what next? She said to contact the executor of the will.
Instead of making a call I thought it was better to put it in writing and send his brother a letter with all the information on what had transpired. Two weeks later we had no response so my husband called him. "Oh, that was turned over to another family member to take care of and that person would be mailing my husband a check."
Then we get a call two nights ago from the brother saying he was away until next week, but he will be sending a check when he gets home.
I marked the calendar, if we don't get the check by the middle of October my husband will make another phone call, but it won't be as nice as the last one.
This is crazy - for a few hundred dollars they have us going through hoops which is why it's harder go get money out of a relative than blood out of a turnip.

And at this point I would normally say 'forget it' but he got basically nothing and his bro got it all.

@AbbyGreenhill This is exactly what happened to my husband. He got nothing at all from his mother, while his step father got everything.

@LadyDuck My husband's brother was, obviously, the favorite. She doted on him constantly - I'm surprised he knows how to button his own shirt she did so much for him. But the one thing that keeps my husband sane is that the mother and the brother lived next to each other - the mom was always at the bro's house - day after day after day.

Family stuff like this is so fun isn't it? My dad's family were weird like this too. . They thought that money he left me should have gone to them. Why I don't know.

Yes, I guess some of it is my fault 'assuming' it would be taken care of.
