Yes, people do buy used mattresses

When I posted a few days ago about selling our used mattress, @marlina asked, "Do people buy used mattresses?" I told her, "Yes they do." Now I have proof. I listed the mattress on several Facebook yard sale groups for my area. While some who responded wanted it almost for free, I received an offer that I was happy with, told the person it was her. Shortly thereafter I got two more offers and I told them if the deal feel through I would contact them. The buyer, her significant other and her dad arrived yesterday. They were very happy with the mattress as it's in excellent condition and you can tell that from looking at it. I got a little worried when they showed up in a mini-van but they did manage to get the box springs inside the van and, although not something we would do, the mattress was strapped on top of the vehicle. That alone conjured up all kinds of scenarios in our minds. What the big worry was - the weather. It was extremely windy and they had an hour or more ride home. They live up on the plateau, which mean going up a big mountain with a mattress tied to the roof of your vehicle fighting the wind. We didn't see anything on the news about a flying mattress causing traffic back-ups, so we assume they made it home safe and sound. We got a good price and we are happy that we didn't just trash the mattress. My husband is happy that his garage is now clean and neat and mattress-free. Photo is mine.

I have never slept on anything but used mattresses. I would love to have something rather than this worn out one I am sleeping on too. You can see the springs in it.

There is the proof: you just wrote that someone bought a used mattress. Personally, I would not.

Some can't afford anything different. She is 33 weeks pg. and has two other kids and is only 27 - her and her husband are unemployed. The mother bought it for them.

@Fleura This was a $1400 mattress so it held up well. We thought $250 was a fair price to get for it.

There are many people to whom any kind of mattress is a blessing and they will pay a reasonable price for a good used one. I have done so in the past. There are too many people in this world without a place to sleep to trash a nice mattress like yours. I am glad you got a good deal for it too.

When I work in a 5 star hotel, the management decided to sell our old mattresses and people around are happy to bought some. It's still in good condition and the price are low compared to new mattress sold in different stores.

Mattress sold quickly, congratulations! People surely do buy anything used/preowned/preloved! Even worn shoes I had posted, people even offered it! They can still be worn but I don't want them, someone else's trash is someone else's treasure!

I've been to hundreds of yard sales in my lifetime and the most disgusting thing is to see people buying used undies....that's just gross.

the only issue I have with the idea, and I have used used mattresses before is the potential for bed bugs and the like. We always treated ours outside, and then sealed it in a water proof bag, and then brought it in and put sheets on it, with pets and such, that keeps the mattress better longer anyways

We don't have bed bugs that's for sure and Ruby is not allowed on the bed, so I'm pretty sure it's nice and safe.

If I don´t decide to rent furnished the apartment I will buy for students, I´ll have to sell part of my furniture. I hope I can get rid of my old things.

@AbbyGreenhill I hope so. I have very good furniture, but when I move to a smaller place they won´t fit anywhere.

i didn't think much about the mattress on the roof (given how people transport stuff here) but when you described the wind, the mountain and the distance, i got concerned, too. i'm glad you didn't "give it away" since it still looks good. it can get insulting when people haggle to much. i'm sure they'll clean and disinfect it before they use it.

We bought it in April of 2013 - it wasn't even manufactured until Feb of '13 so it's not even 4 years old.

We didn't see anything on the news about a flying mattress either! Yes, a used mattress can and will be sold when in good shape like the one you offered for sale.

A used mattress is surely something I would not like to buy. I remember we bought a pretty cheap one when we married and changed it later for a better one, but we did not want a used one.

@AbbyGreenhill People are more lucky here with Ikea, the price for a foam mattress (brand new) starts at 150$ and it's a good mattress. You can have a very inexpensive, but not very good mattress for 35$.

@LadyDuck There was a couple at the yard sale and the man said, oh, darn , we just bought a new king mattress and it was expensive, $300 - if he thinks that's expensive he lives in a dream world...but he probably got it at Odd Lots.

Some of us are more lucky than others. Most of the people in this area could not afford to buy the the 250 one at its original price of fourteen hundred.

If you have very little money then you can't buy brand new unless you buy a really cheap one at big lots or something.

@amadeo and there are very poor people who have no other choice.

All but one of our mattresses are used ones - good quality though and clean. I've driven around the place with mattresses strapped to the roof of the car several times! Usually remember to take something to wrap it up in though. Now we bought a new house and the previous owners who were downsizing kindly left us two spare beds so we have two more used mattresses for the collection.

I just checked with the girl, she said they had to stop one time to make sure it had not slipped...she also said she slept like a baby last night.

@AbbyGreenhill I think it is great that someone bought it. I had a chair I did not ask how big it was and started to lug it home and that was at the time I had a back problem and they helped me bring it up the stairs and to my door. It was a pain and sold it and put the price I wanted and this lady was not very nice and wanted to sell it and she put down what she wanted to pay for it and said this is what I am giving you and you take it or not. I wanted it gone and was not happy that she cheated me but it was gone. I hope
