What Have They Done?

As you can see from the photo, someone is in a spot of bother. We've seen this scene for several days but had the chance to photograph it just yesterday. It seems they are filling in this dam. It has been drained (mostly) and it looks like they're putting tyres in it and then I presume they'll cover it with earth. I'm not sure why the excavator is down there but it is now firmly stuck in the wall of the dam. One track is invisible to the front and the bucket affair has been swung around. Guess which side of the road we'll be watching for the next few weeks?

Oh goodness - they do strange things - will it note pose as a threat - the tyres in the water I mean?

@JudyEv The materials of modern pneumatic tires are synthetic rubber, natural rubber made from crude oil, fabric and wire, along with carbon black and other chemical compounds. So why would they be putting this back in the earth?

The tyres will be buried under earth and the dam will disappear. I don't think it is the best idea but it looks like that is what is going to happen.

@Inlemay I should imagine because they want to get rid of the tyres and aren't smart enough to know it's not a good idea.

Its strange to fill the dam with tires and then cover it with earth. Why tires ?

I'm wondering if the tyre company in town owns it and just wants to get rid of their old tyres - but I don't know that.

@JudyEv maybe someone should report to the authorities.

@Madshadi Maybe I will. I'm always saying 'someone ought to do this' or 'ought to do that' so maybe it's time I was that 'someone'.

hope they can extricate it or they are likely to bury it and drown it in there

Most of the water has been drained away. I don't know why they had it down there in the first place.

Why are they covering the dam? It does not like to be a good idea.

@JudyEv I would ring the Shire, I did when they were cutting trees around the stream near our property and they had not the right. They stopped them immediately.

They have drained the dam and I presumed they were going to fill it in. I don't know why the excavator was there - and still is! :) I may ring the Shire and find out if they know about it although I feel sure they have to.

Wow, what a predicament to be in. I wonder how they will get it out?

@JudyEv It sure does look stuck. I guess that's why they abandoned it for now.

I guess when the whole area dries out they might bring in a crane or something. It looks pretty stuck at the moment.

I might have to ring the shire and see if they know about it although it is right next to the road and easily visible.

Not sure if the environmental laws are the same in Australia as they are in the United States, but here it would be highly illegal to dispose of, or bury, tires that way.

Why are they filling it in?

I can only presume that they don't want the water. The river is close by and they probably have pumping rights - which makes it even more stupid to bury tyres there in my opinion.

Wow, wonder what they are going to use to pull that thing out of there.

I guess when it dries out they might bring in a crane. I can't imagine how else they'll shift it.
