Ari (the Puppy) and a Colicky Baby

I enjoyed reading your comments on my last post about my daughter needing to be rocked to sleep. It was interesting to hear how so many of you handled the issues of new baby and new momma. Someone's comment reminded me of our dog “Ari” and his reaction to having a crying baby around. First of all I should explain his name. We saw a sign for free puppies. We needed one (we thought ) so we got one. I was pregnant and we disagreed about what to call this cute bundle of black fur. He ended up with the name “Aristotle”. It was 1969. Jackie Kennedy had recently married Aristotle Onassis (a greek like my husband) and he thought it would be a good name for our dog OR our son... I accepted the name for the dog so my son if I had a boy wouldn't get the name.. And I had a Girl... I had postpartum depression. I didn't know until our daughter was a few days old and I asked my doctor about it. He explained it to both my husband and I so we could deal with my unusual feelings and sadness together. So Ari the puppy became a part of our family a few months before the baby showed up. He (the puppy) was gentle with the baby but really didn't like her crying. (Colicky babies cry a lot) Some times with my depression I had a hard time dealing with the crying. I would hold her in my arms and walk around our house singing to her and cuddling her and sometimes I would I just join in with her crying... And then the puppy would start to cry... Do you have any idea how hard it was to cry when the baby and the puppy were crying with me? It made me laugh out loud and certainly did stop my crying for that moment anyway. I think Ari knew I would stop if he cried with us so he did that often those first months. It was comic relief for me. The vacuum also stopped my baby from crying...but it made the dog bark...no rest for the wicked.

Ari sounds like he was a very sweet and sensitive furbaby. I had a colicky baby too...my daughter...and I can understand how frustrating it was.

@PainsOnSlate I was the same way...never had anyone go through it that was close to me. Fortunately, after many doctor visits, I found a doctor who gave me drops to put in her formula. The drops relieved the gas pains and she was so much easier to be around after that.

I'm glad I wrote this because a lot of us had a colicky baby. For years I've never heard of anyone else who went through it, I knew other experienced it but not any of my friends...

@simone10 Mine was Born in 1970, we had an old fashioned country family doctor and he just said it will be gone in three months, noting to soothe her but he was right. It was like she was looking at the calendar. Exactly three months and she was a different, happy baby.

funny .... well, not the depression of course .... but it's kool how dogs sometimes seem to know exactly what to do to break that mood. Ari was a handsome fella.

We enjoyed him a lot, he traveled all over the state with us. Then one hunting season he disappeared off his run in the yard. Never found him but figured a hunter needed a good hunting dog... we wondered if he came back with sticks instead of ducks....that's what we taught him to do... I think Chris was in the first grade, she was devastated someone stole him. We went to the pound and came home with a kitty....

Oh man that sounds awful lol I am glad you are able to have a sense of humor about it. My daughter had acid reflux really bad so she cried all the time as well. I had to stand and bounce around with her constantly. I had post partum depression as well. I wasn't exactly sad as I just did not feel connected to her for months. I felt like I was babysitting. I did not have that with my son at all thankfully when he was born 3 1/2 years later.

@PainsOnSlate I was told by a psychologist that Post Partum depression is more likely after giving birth to girls because we have the extra female hormones inside us all the months of pregnancy and then after the birth our bodies go kind of crazy without them.

@Hatley This was a long time ago - 1970 to be exact, I'm just telling a story...That baby is now 46. You went through it too so you remember how hard a collicy baby can cry... you and I both made it through it...

Oh my goodness, you made me laugh too. I can imagine the puppy crying or barking at the vacuum. Not a quiet home for several months I suppose.

@Painsonslate Oh how I feel for you to suffer from ppd and have a colicky young one. It is not fun to deal with either of those things alone much less doubled. Ari was certainly beautiful. Glad he brought you some comic relief. I have to wonder why a vacuum cleaner soothes some babies? My little cousin loved the vacuum cleaner when she was a baby.

its hard to cry when the dog joins in by howling...The vacuum did make the baby crier stop for a while but not so much with the puppy...

The vacuum trick works for most crying babies it seems, but, yes-the dog will be barking for sure if the vacuum is on.

It was a noisy three months. She must have been watching because when the three months was over, she was a perfect baby...and my floors were dirty since then

He would howl when she and I both cried, if it was just her he would come find me in the house and tell me she needs attention...
