To have or not to have?

Been having difficulty breathing the past weeks. Then, out from nowhere, there was this sudden cough & colds (no reason or cause, am sure). Did not drink or eat anything frozen or cold. But, the cough & colds seem got crazy! The sleepless nights were too much! So, my dearly beloved said enough of my refusal to consult a Doc. He brought me to a Pulmonologist. Showed her my chest xray & results of blood chemistry. She was more concerned with the whizzing coming from my throat. No, she said it's not asthma. Something is blocking my airvalve (or was it pipe?), & it has to be addressed ASAP, before I get an emergency & the ER Doc will not be able to simply do the procedure. She said, it is called Tracheostomy. The Doc explained to me what has to be done & why. Me, having my throat slit & clipped with that "thing"? I felt my hair rose to the 10th power! But, for now, I need to complete taking for 1 week her prescribed antibiotics & exflem (in a sachet). She asked me to go back to her clinic on Saturday. Before that, we have to discuss when to have the "T". I wasn't comfortable thinking about the procedure. So, I asked google what is really this Tracheostomy. What I read & saw in the images made my hair again rose. This time to the 20th power!

Ooohh, I am so sorry this is being contemplated. Hopefully the antibiotices will make a T unnecessary. I don't know much about them but my hair would be rising too.

I don't blame you for being so hesitant. Did the pulmonologist tell you exactly why the procedure is necessary? What is the reason she recommended a tracheostomy? Is there any other, less invasive procedure that can be performed instead? Has other imaging been done of your throat to show that there is an obstruction that needs to be bypassed, or will this be simply to clear out your esophagus? Did she say if this is to be a temporary or permanent procedure? If she hasn't answered your questions to your satisfaction, it's absolutely okay to make another appointment with her to discuss the procedure or go see another doctor for a second opinion. You deserve to have all the facts you can so you can make an informed decision about your treatment plan.

Hi! Please refresh my memory. You're a Doctor of Medicine? Re, my Pulmonologist. She said there is something that is blocking my airvalve (airpipe?). And, a tracheostomy must be had, ASAP, to remove this blockage. No, there was no test/imaging done. Maybe there will be if I agree already to the procedure.

Maybe you should ask for another doctor's opinion before having that operation . My mother-in-law was advised to have an immediate operation when she had gallstones giving her so much pain . But she is so thin and weak , we brought her to Manila to ask for a second opinion at Manila Doctors . The doctor said that an immediate operation might kill her because her body can't take it . She was given medicines and a complete meal powder she drinks everyday . After six months she gained weight and that's the time she went back to Manila Doctors to have her operation . So, get a second opinion , my friend .

KnehKnah, I am very worried about you having this procedure done. Did your doctor take more images to see what was causing the blockage? I am surprised she suggested that you should have a tracheotomy without taking any x-rays or even an ultra-sound image of your esophagus first. May I suggest you go to a different doctor and ask for a second opinion? Unless you are dying, there is always time to have new images done so the latest information is available. Your doctor was very quick to just say let's cut into you! I see you haven't been on myLot since the 4th of December. I am very worried about you, hon! I hope everything goes well for you!

@KnehKnah *DE jumps up and down, happy KnehKnah didn't have surgery!* I am happy to know you had another doctor give a new opinion! I was worried you didn't get a second opinion! SMH! Some doctors see only dollar signs instead of looking at a patient as a person, first!

Hi, my dear DE! I am still alive! Yehey! First of all, am sorry for not being able to write an answer to this comment of yours at once. You see, aside from this thyroid cancer which seemed to have caused some concerns in my heart too, my eyes are also not cooperating most of the time. They see those "sea-like waves", all in its silver splendor! Gosh! Anyway, I can see well today, so am back to read & "see" yah! I did not allow the Pulmonologist to cut my throat! And as you suggested, I had a 2nd opinion. My new Pulmonologist said I don't need tracheostomy! OMG!
