Have you ever been in a serious car crash?

Back in the day, my younger brother had a 1968 Plymouth Barracuda. It was already an "old" car by the time we were old enough to drive, and it was built like a brick sh-t house. I was in College in Iowa, and we were "partying." I drove it out on one of those two lane highways and got it to go "pretty fast" (that's all I'll say). On the way back, my brother took over. With the cornfields flying by, and the speedometer at (cough), I said, "Don't forget the 90 degree turn coming up." Big mistake. My younger brother liked to do the opposite of what I request (still does). He accelerated. As we rolled, I remember dirt flying in my face through the shattered windshield. We weren't wearing seatbelts, but neither of us got tossed from the car, and neither of us was seriously injured. The car was totaled. Recently, I bought the Hot Wheels (or is it Matchbox?) shown in the picture. I was going to send it to my brother as a gag Christmas present. It looks a lot like by brother's old "Cuda, but it's actually a 1969 Mercury Cyclone, a totally different animal. I decided to donate it to my neighbor friend's car collection andkeep looking for a '68 'Cuda. When we play, my friend calls it "your brother's car," though he knows it's a Cyclone and not a Barracuda. I'm glad to be here. Have you ever been in a serious car accident, or otherwise almost been killed?

I wasn't in a serious one. But I do remember one time when I was young. My mom stole my dads pick up (long story) and some drunk driver ran into her. At that time there wasn't the laws about seat belts and stuff. I was in between the seats when it happened. I didn't now what was going on but I do remember the clinking and clanking of my dads empties under the seat.

My mom was in a car wreck last week. Somebody ran a red light. The car is totaled. I'm really glad she's okay, but she was driving my car, so I'm also in mourning.

I was a new driver and pulled across lanes of traffic to make a left hand turn. Someone hit my front end, driver's side, at least 45 MPH. Luckily I was in my 1965 Oldsmobile F-85 and all I got was a bump on the head. The car was totaled but a mechanic got me going and when I finally had to let it go it had close to 400,000 miles on it.

I have that scenario in my life right now--where I have to go across several lanes of traffic to get to the left turn lane. I'm glad I'm "old" and patient. I just wait until oncoming traffic clears before I head onto that street. It's actually when I leave my Mexican lunch place and head home, so it happens once a week or so.

We can be so stupid when we're young! I've never been in a car crash (touch wood) but I did get run over when I was 9. It was the first time I'd ever gone out on my own, we lived on a council estate and the local library was just across the road, which was a dual carriageway. My mam told me to scream if anybody tried to "get me", she was waiting at the front door and would have heard me. On my way out of the library, I looked both ways (dual carriageway but I had to account for drunk drivers) and it was clear so I crossed. Just as I was about to step onto the grass verge in the middle, a car hit me in the hip and I was thrown into the air, then I slid along the concrete path and ended up on the grass. I screamed and scream

Oops, not finished I screamed but my mam didn't hear me cos the phone had rang while she was listening out for me, she was in the living room with the door shut, so a passer by got my address and went and got her. My little sister, 5 at the time, was in the middle of a poo and my mam just pulled her trousers up and carried her out of the house The ambulance arrived really really quickly, I was in it by the time my mam and sister got there, and my little sister was crying and asked them if I was going to die I can understand why, cos they had me on a stretcher with a neck brace on, so I sat up as much as I could and said "no, I'm fine!" so she could see I was alright, they told me to lay down and I said I will but can you just tell my sister I'm alright! Luckily I didn't break anything, all that happened was I scraped all the skin off my side where I slid across the path. Turned out the guy had pulled out from a parking space and was turned around telling his kids to put their seatbelts on, he accelerated without looking and hit me. At least that was his story, he actually initially tried to flee the scene, so I don't believe his story. I got £2,500 compensation for that, we went to court and he didn't bother to turn up. Even then I was worried about him and his family because I thought they'd have to pay the compensation all in one go and they wouldn't have any money for food, but the judge explained to me that it would be paid like a tax and they wouldn't notice it.

You should consider yourself lucky to survive such accident. I've never been in a serious one. Only minor ones, and it wasn't even my car.

@TheHorse I guess because it all happened too fast to realize how dangerous that was. By the way, what did you do to your brother after the crash? lol

Yep, I'm happy to be around. I remember not thinking I was going to die as it was happening. I'm not sure why.

Yes, I have. But, it was not an exact car crash. I was hit by a car in a Kroger Grocery store parking lot when I was 12 years old living in Atlanta GA. I spent 4 months in the hospital with extensive damage to my left leg and lots of surgeries. It is a miracle I didn't lose my life or my leg. It is a miracle I can walk today.

No. The worst was when a man decided I was moving at a roundabout and went into the back of my car as I turned left onto it. That did write the car off and give me whiplash, but we still went home that night.

Yep, me and two others rolled down Mt. Cheaha. But I was in a seat belt and when we stopped we were hanging upside down from those belts, no one was hurt but that Camero was a goner. I think it was a `72 ?

No, but I had several near misses by the Grace of God.I am glad nothing too serious had happened to you. You lived to tell a tale. If the car was totaled how do you explain how you and your brother came off with scratches? That might be interesting to hear. By the way, like the new profile pic (^_^)
