Wi-Fi in our Melbourne Accommodation

I said my last post would be the last before Christmas but I lied. We're now in Melbourne and we have wi-fi so that is good. We've just found out that RTE [Radio Telefís Éireann (Radio Television Ireland)] is recording and live-broadcasting midnight mass in the Donnybrook Catholic Church in Western Australia on Christmas eve. The actual wording is 'televised' so I guess that means TV. I can't believe that there hasn't been a bit of publicity about this before now. The times and information are on the parish website so it sounds legit. Donnybrook is also a suburb in Dublin. 'Our' Donnybrook is very small and I'm finding it hard to understand why RTE is interested in doing this. There are bigger congregations with bigger and better everything all over the state but somehow it seems we're 'it'. What a pity we won't be here for it although we've pretty much stopped going to church.

I am sure that our TV is going to transmit the midnight Mass with the Pope in Rome.

@JudyEv Can you believe that the Church sells tickets to assist at the Mass in Rome? What did Jesus say about the "merchants in the temple"? I am disgusted.

That is an obvious one to televise but downtown Donnybrook? I'm still waiting to hear there has been a mistake.

People in Ireland will see a Christmas Eve mass in Australia in the afternoon? I had a look, and 11 pm in Australia is 2 1/2 pm in Ireland, it is a bit early. Maybe they chose this church because it is very small. Our TV alternates between small communities and large cathedrals for the Sunday mass. I had a look and our midnight mass on TV will be the mass celebrated by pope Francis in Rome.

This is true which makes it all seem a bit crazy. I will be keen to find what out actually happened when I get home.

@ChesneyM I'm sure there is plenty of true believers in the large churches but I've always liked the tiny ones myself. I always feel much nearer to God in the small churches.

Televising religious rituals including mass has become a way here since pretty long So have you decided to watch it in the comforts of your hotel?

Church services are quite often televised here too but not from such a tiny place. I can't imagine it even being broadcast in Western Australia, let alone in Victoria where we are.

In the south church TV is a biggie - none are Catholic.

It just seems really odd. Donnybrook really is a 'nothing' little town. I don't think the priest is even Irish.

I've always been curious...what's the most popular, or biggest, church denomination in Australia? Is it the Catholic Church, or a Protestant denomination?

You took a beautiful photo; how nice to fly above the clouds. Yes, they are broadcasting it on television, maybe to allow busy people or those who could not go to church to hear mass.

Thanks. I'm glad you like the photo. We often have church televised here but only from capital cities or big centres.

Even the churches are affected by technology. Why go to church if the church is on your phone or tablet

That's true to a large degree. Some like meeting other parishioners I guess if they don't see them any other way.

Bummer that you won't be there. I've been listening to Handel's Messiah. Didn't go to one this year, though.

@TheHorse No. Just the congregation unless they have pulled in a choir from somewhere. That's what makes it so strange. I'm still puzzling over it.

I am burning with curiousity about it. There would only be an organ unless they've pulled in musicians from elsewhere.

That is nice that they are televising from a small church instead of one of the larger ones. I am sure that there will be lots of people there for midnight mass.

There wouldn't normally be too many but perhaps if the word goes out about the televising, the congregation will be bigger.
