Have you written a book?

My wife Anne did, she edited and published a book called The Pulpit and The Bottle that was started by her dad, about his father, who was a prominent Presbyterian minister, until he became an alcoholic.
But what brought that to mind today is that Anne Googled her name this morning. Among many other things, she ran across a site offering "free books." Among those books is hers, published and copyrighted in 2005 and available for sale on Amazon. The site offering this "free" book and many others is called "Playster."
Now, any work of writing you create (in the US and mostly internationally) is automatically copyrighted, but if you need to defend that work, it must be registered with the US copyright office.
I just thought I would pass this info along to other authors who play on myLot.

It might matter to whomever the author shown on the book is this site is giving away the work.

Yes, I wrote a book in 2000 and copyrighted and registered with the U.S. copyright office. It is true it's automatically copyrighted. But to give it teeth you should register it with the U.S. copyright office.
My question is, how did the site get her book? Did they buy the book from someone? Are they used books they are giving away? If they bought the book and are giving it away, there is nothing you can do about it whether it is registered with the U.S. copyright office or not. If someone else bought the books and gave them to the site, there is nothing you can do about it. There is no law stopping someone from giving away books that they bought. Just because they are giving away the books doesn't mean they weren't bought by someone. The only way I can think of them getting the book without someone paying for it is if your wife had someone unscrupulous print it or her contract stated they can give away a certain number of books. Some will give away books as a promotion. This site may have gotten there hands on these books. It may even turn out to be a plus for your wife by getting a small number of her books out and letting word of mouth promote it.

@TheHorse It would appear that anyone searching the name could get info on the scam. but many authors are probably unaware that their books are being offered on the site.

@JamesHxstatic If it's a scam then they probably do not have access to the books. What do they do, reel you in with the promise of free books then demand money or that you need to buy something?

@JudyEv She is not happy since they are violating the copyright and at least claiming to have the ability to provide all these books. It is some kind of scam site apparently.

@JamesHxstatic So is she happy that it is being offered free? If not, is she able to do anything about it?

@Ayuriny I hope so too. It is from my days growing up in the state of Texas in the 1950s.

Anne self-published too. She is thinking of offering print on demand.

@Hannihar A few sell every year. Some people prefer paper copies (all her initial copies did sell), so Amazon offers this print on demand option. I am not sure of the cost.

What is print on demand mean? Did she sell a lot of them?

That sounds similar to what can be done in the US.

I've published a few books and so far I haven't seen them on any pirating sites, but I have heard it happened to other authors.

I wonder what would happen if someone "stole" one of my songs. I've never formally Copyrighted them. Did you hear the one that Vanny posted? I've never written a book, but I have a few boring academic publications out there, including one in a book called Sociological Studies of Children and Youth. Woo hoo! Did your wife write the one about her grandfather with her dad? Or complete and edit the book after his passing?
