A Day at The Beach

Yesterday the four of us piled into my missus car and headed down to the beach. We were all ready for a get-out-of-town day. It was a perfect day for a winter visit to the beach. Temperatures were in the 60(F)s and there was abundant sunshine. We visited the aquarium where Son2 used to volunteer first. It was farthest away. Then we had lunch at one of the new restaurants (new to me since I lived there as a kid), before heading to the beach I spent a good part of my youth on. Being back on the beach where I spent so many days as kid brought back a rush of memories, all good. I told my boys some stories of things I did there when I was a boy. Though they've probably heard the stories dozens of time, they listened appreciatively. We were treated to the antics of dozens of pelicans and seagulls diving on a school of fish just offshore. I took lots of pictures, thank goodness for digital cameras, including the one shown here. It took many tries to catch the pelicans in the act of diving. Today promises to be a busy day as well. We're trying to fit in all the errands we need to run before vacation ends. I'll be back later to catch up on my notifications. In the meantime, I hope you all have a blessed day.

You really did capture the pelicans in dive bomb mode.

I just wish I'd held the shutter for one or two more heartbeats and caught them entering the water. Still, I like this photo. You should see the dozens of shots I took trying to capture this moment.

Your picture certainly captures those pelicans and the beautiful blue water. Wish I could enjoy a winter day at the beach. Right now we're having snow

We had thunder this morning, and the old wives tale is that thunder in winter brings snow within a week. We have had some unseasonably warm days over Christmas around here.

Just curious to know if the water had not frozen considering it is winter. But I really wonder if a sea ever freezes.

@DWDavis But does the sea freeze elsewhere. I know of lakes and stuff but seas?

The water off of our coast does not freeze. Our winters are mild compared to areas farther north.

@allknowing Near the poles the sea freezes, and I understand in Northern Canada some harbors freeze over. I've read that ice forms on parts of the Bearing Sea off the northern Alaska shore.

Thank you. Pelicans used to be rare on the NC coast. Now, they are everywhere and love hanging out around piers.

The picture did not show up, it may be too large. Sounds like a good day.

@BelleStarr The original, uncropped version has been accepted on Pixabay. I'm pretty happy about that.

How many degrees would that be in Celsius, please?

@MALUSE Our use of the old "standard" measurement system is an anachronism it is long-time-past we abandoned. I will try to remember to show both forms of measurement in future posts. It will help metric members, and it will be good practice for me.

Sorry about that. Let me do the math. I think it would be about 15-16 Celsius.

@DWDavis Thank you. The majority of the members don't use Fahrenheit. It's only used in the United States as well as the Bahamas, Belize, and the Cayman Islands.

We got some rain today, and the old timers say the thunder we had this morning will bring snow soon. I hope they are wrong about that.

I love watching the pelicans when I'm at the beach too. I think I'm going to see a lot of snow and no sand this winter,,,

Right now were seeing raindrops instead of snowflakes, and I'm fine with that, but it is raw and cold.

You certainly caught a great photo of the pelicans. They are too fast for me, or I'm too slow for them. Lol! It sounds like you're making the most of your vacation. Enjoy!

This is a great photo! How many did you have to take to get this one? If you are anything like us, it would have been dozens. :) Glad you had such a nice day. And isn't it great when people listen to the same stories without showing any resentment or tedium?

I'm not sure how many, but it was probably close to a hundred shots to get this one. If you want pictures of gulls and pelicans floating or flying, I've got dozens.

Our camping trip to the beach was washed out by Hurricane Matthew this year. We're hoping for an early spring trip next year.

We had a very enjoyable day. It was special just being together, even more so because we don't know when Son1 will be able to be home for the holidays again.

Sounds like a wonderful day you had. Love the picture you should blow that up and frame it. It is great that you were able to tell your children stories as they will cherish those moments forever.

I hadn't thought about enlarging and framing the picture. I might follow up on that.
