What's Going on Behind the Red Door?

The Collingwood area in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, was once full of warehouses and factories. Because it is close to the inner city area, it is popular with young people and commuters. Many of the old buildings are being transformed into trendy apartments. We stayed in one for four days over Christmas.
Our rooms (bedroom/lounge and ensuite) were on the ground floor. You needed a key to get into a hallway off the street. Stairs on the right led to the owners' rooms while we went through a huge, solid, red door into our haven. The latch was a big iron affair. At one time our area must have been a strongroom perhaps. It would be nice if some buildings could talk, wouldn't it?

@teamfreak16 It's massive isn't it? Imagine trying to support that while fitting it to the hinges.

@JudyEv - Ah. Makes sense. That door looks like it would certainly do the trick!

That is one heavy duty door. No one is going to kick that down.

It would be very difficult to force entry wouldn't it?

There is a purpose for having that heavy duty door. I wonder what it is

@averygirl72 I think there would have been valuable goods in the area behind the door or perhaps even their safe.

I'm sure the history is documented somewhere - maybe in the council records or something like that.

@judyev The attic my brother used to live in in Paris had a Jew hole that he discovered by accident. During the war a false wall had been built to hide Jews and after the war it was forgotten about till my brother knocked a stick against the wall accidentally and it sounded quite hollow so he investigated and discovered that he had an extra room. His building was used in the film Sarah's Key about the round up of Jews. Made it all seem horribly real.

Yes, it would. People took such risks to save others. I'll never forget touring Oradour in France where the village has been left as it was after the Germans rounded up the whole village, killed everyone and set fire to the houses. Very sobering stuff.

I'm sure there would be a lot of history to tell if those buildings (and doors) could talk! I really like that red door, it looks really unique with its big iron latch.

was your room for sleeping only? no kitchenette to at least warm food, make coffee, a mini fridge? where did you eat while you were there?

Oh yes.......and the stories that we'd hear! I love this big red door.
And coincidentally, we have a city called Collingwood right here in Ontario.
Its up in what we refer to as "cottage country" in our province of Ontario.
My husband and I passed thru it last summer when we went away for a little bit.

The units were nicely done. Only one room wide but very deep.

What is an ensuite? So true though, if walls could talk. That place looks like it has a lot of character

An ensuite is a bathroom, that you don't share with others, attached to a bedroom. There was a door from our bedroom to a bathroom with toilet, shower and hand-basin. We didn't have to share it with others.
