Mail-Boxes at Yabberup, Western Australia

One of my recent posts showed a milk churn in the town of Cowaramup. Behind the churn could be seen a number of post boxes. Anna (@LadyDuck) commented that her mail was delivered to the house. This happens in our towns and cities too. The photo shows a line-up of mail-boxes outside the hall at Yabberup, Western Australia. There is no post office or shops at Yabberup, just a number of hobby farmers on plots ranging from half an acre to perhaps 10 or 20 acres. They each have their own mail-box near the hall. If you look carefully, you might be able to see a milk-churn; also a canister that would have once held reel-to-reel films. Old microwave ovens are also popular mail-boxes. Do you have photos of unusual mail-boxes to share with us?

The only "old fashioned" mail boxes like that in the US can be found only in rural areas not cities.

I'm sure I've seen photos of some quaint US country mail-boxes.

The degree of regimentation varies from place to place. I remember a classmate complaining about a letter her family got from the post office telling them their mailbox wasn't up to snuff. It didn't conform. We lived in rural Colorado at the time. The smart @ss even than, I asked her how the letter was delivered if her mailbox was so deficient.

@msiduri Good question. There seems there is a lot of unnecessary regimentation around.

I had a dog mail box one time. I thought it was cute. My kids where teenagers at the time and they were embarrassed by it so I took it down. lol

Poor kids. It is a shame they find parents so embarrassing.

This is funny, we are not creative here, all the mail boxes must be identical.

Most in the suburbs are variations on a theme.

@JudyEv We have two models for private homes, that are not very different one from the other, only the dimension.

@LadyDuck I'm a bit surprised at that. Some places are very regimented. Australia seems to be heading that way and probably in some housing estates there are similar rules and regulations.

@JudyEv The funny is in their height and placement - not that they are found randomly on the side of the passing road - never seen anything like it

@Inlemay Fair enough - but I guess I'm used to such things. They still don't seem all that funny. But that fact itself is funny.

I didn't think they were quite that funny but I'm glad you enjoyed them. :)

Those are some very interesting mailboxes! Got to give those people credit for being creative, and for coming up with new uses for old containers!

@JudyEv I'm like you...I don't like waste! I like to see people finding new ways of using old things. It's better that a product gets re-used than to see it wind up in a landfill or garbage dump somewhere!

@moffittjc The old film canister would have to be absolutely years old. It is a long time since reel-to-reel movies were shown. And the cream churn is ancient too.

Do you go to a PO to collect your mail or do you just have an 'ordinary' type of mailbox?

@JudyEv - We have a metal box with all 11 complex mailboxes in it. It's right outside our apartment door.

The mail is delivered to the house here in Britain as well, so we do not have mail boxes. I cannot remember ever seeing a mail box anywhere that I have travelled.

Isn't that interesting? I was amazed when I first worked out that mail was pushed through a slot in the door. I thought that seemed a real invasion of a person's house.

Those mailboxes are different. Some people have interesting mailboxes and some don't. I like mine it has cardinals on it.

I think cardinals are lovely birds. We don't have any that are completely red like your cardinals.

really? people use old microwave ovens, just set them up and the mail carrier opens them and puts the mail on the turntable inside?

Yes, it's not rocket science! Perhaps the turntables are gone but they make good letter boxes.

I have not seen any that unusual. Our postal service might dictate the size and shape here for efficient delivery from the vehicles they use on rural routes.

I can understand our rural posties would hope for something like that too but I don't know what the requirements are, if any.
