Don't let your shopping cart be shopped

We talk about the stupid things people do. Well ladies, many of you do the one stupid thing that is totally avoidable....
There is a news story today regarding a woman authorities are looking for in North GA and in the Chattanooga/Cleveland area of TN. Why - the woman has been stealing purses out of shopping carts.
How many times have you seen it - an unattended shopping cart with an open purse. The person is 10 feet away picking out lettuce or canned fruit...not a worry in the world...no clue what is happening.
It only takes a few seconds for someone to grab that purse and be out of the store. With surveillance cameras hopefully this woman in today's story will be caught. The public now knows what she looks like. But, will ladies stop the bad habit? I doubt it.
Keep your purse with you. Do not leave it in your shopping cart. How many times have you seen this and wanted to say something like, "Hey there lady, I could have taken your purse and been long gone with it."
Don't let your shopping cart be shopped!

No they don't and I don't understand how such 'normal looking' little old ladies do it all the time.

@AbbyGreenhill I guess they maybe spent years being able to do and now it's suddenly not safe any more.

@JudyEv It probably never was safe, we just didn't hear or see it on the news.

For some reason this is done all the time, I see it in a lot of stores, women doing this. My friend did this at the gas stations, she left her purse in the car and came back purse going, ID, everything.. I have known several women who have the purse taken from leaving it in the car at the gas station.
Wallets have been taken out of purses in a grocery store I used to work in, the security cameras do not always capture it. As they are not always on, so people get away with a lot, with so much crime and theft, you can't leave anything unattended including your kids.

Many may years ago I worked security in a department store. I sat up high way above the shoppers and kept an eye out for such things...so it's not new but they get more creative day by day.

@AbbyGreenhill exactly , not new at all, but happens a lot, people just get comfortable and don't think it could happen to them.

I have never left my purse in a shopping trooley ever. When I go shopping I use a body bag (one that goes over the head and across the body). I can't go out without my phone and house keys and a couple of bags for the shopping and that bag is always attached to me leaving my hands free too.

Those types are good for that reason. I use a shoulder bag and always hang onto the bag. I do a lot of 'one handed shopping' LOL!

@AbbyGreenhill I find that a shoulder bag gets in the way when I am dipping into the freezers for frozen goods. People could slip their hands into when I am bending down. I use them on other occasions but not when I am shopping for food.

@AbbyGreenhill In the UK, handbags and purses are different things (pocket book isn't used; it gives me the image of a cheque book holder for some reason when I see the name). A purse is a small item in which cash and cards would be placed, which would then be put in a handbag.

@egdcltd I said those words are what we use. I realize where you are words have different meanings.

Not sure what they do to petty thieves, but some time in the slammer is better than nothing.

With all the bombing problems we have in Europe, an unattended bag on a shopping cart would be immediately "destroyed" by the security fearing that a bomb is inside. There are signs everywhere asking people never to leave bags, purse, handbags, children and whatever unattended.

@AbbyGreenhill We have signs everywhere. I remember that in the US airports there were signs not to leave anything unattended. Kids are a serious problem, they touch everything.

@LadyDuck I was joking about the kids...LOL! I don't go to airports so can't comment on the signs.

I am always very cautious of where my purse is when I am shopping. I get mad at my husband all the time when I step away from the cart to grab something and so does he. I tell him to stay with the cart if my purse is in there. But the warnings and cautions you see all the time and many times it is not the older ones that are loosing their purses wallets money and CCs.

I wouldn't trust my husband not to walk away from a cart so I don't put mine in a cart!!!

I have seen this way too often, and they have been warning of it for many years. People do not learn.

I no longer carry a purse. I have a wristlet.. it's a wallet with a handle so you can carry it around your wrist. It's sort of big, too big to fit into my pants pocket. I can carry it in my coat pocket when it's cold, but if I'm not wearing a coat I just keep it on my wrist.

@AbbyGreenhill I do tend to leave mine home if I'm with my husband.. but I do most of the grocery shopping by myself.

That is also a good thing to use. I could leave mine at home since my husband is always with me - let him use his credit card!

I don't ever put my bag or purse on the shopping cart . There will always be a tendency that somebody will pick it up really , when you unconsciously left your cart to get something in a bit far display rack .

Yes, we see people do that! Also, people leaving children unattended in a cart. How many times has a child turned over a cart or gone head first!

I think it is something that will go on until the end of time, or until we only have virtual grocery stores!

That is some good advice. I see it all the time. I never put my purse in my shopping cart because I always think of this but most women don't it seems.

Thanks for your suggestion. I am very careful when I go outside. Since in the past my wallet was stolen and I told myself I would not make the same mistake again. I don't often use the shopping cart since I find it inconvenient. I prefer to use the basket. No matter what, I always carry my bag and I will not put it away.

I catch myself doing that now and then, and try to loop the purse around my wrist when I put it in the cart, to remind myself to NOT.

When I'm in Walmart, I always have to remind women not to turn their backs on their carts. I try to keep a watch on it until they come back.

And I bet if you ever see those same ladies again they are still doing it. What shocks me is they are so concerned about some things, but don't care where they leave their valuables!

i occasionally will step a short ways away, but i'm always aware of my surroundings when i do so because i have known folks this has happened to. Or i will tell my kids: STAND RIGHT HERE. (then i'll get annoyed if they step away).... i usually try to just keep hold of my purse.

I don't trust anyone LOL...I'd rather not do it - my purse doesn't leave my grasp.
