Ok, my title is an exaggeration, but it definitely feels like that sometimes in my home town - there are around 5000 horses in the area and only about 15,000 people. I live in the East of England in the racehorse capital of the world, and probably half the households in the town have someone working in the racing stables or on the out-lying stud farms. Horses have priority here, and though they have their own designated horsewalks, they still hold up the traffic when they cross the roads. Vehicles sometimes have to wait for quite a while if a string of 30 or so are crossing. We are surrounded by acres and acres of grassland which are used as training grounds for the horses, and the majestic sight of them sweeping up the 'gallops' is really worth seeing. These gallops have been lovingly tended for hundreds of years and so are the finest in the country. Charles II was a frequent visitor to our town in the 17th century, and he used to bring his lady love (Nell Gwynne) with him. He is credited with starting racing here. There are 2 separate racecourses, and they are either side of the 8 mile long earthworks called the Devil's Dyke. This dyke is an Anglo-Saxon defensive barrier consisting of a steep bank and a ditch dating from at least the 10th century. It's great for walking your dog along as you get panoramic views of the racecourse, gallops and training grounds. If you ever come to England I hope you can pay us a visit - I'm sure you would enjoy it. ---------------------------- Photo is of me leading in one of my charges after winning a race many years ago. I wrote this in response to @suziecat 's post about her home in North Carolina which you can see here: http://www.mylot.com/post/3018879/what-do-you-like-about-where-you-live

'the racehorse capital of the world' --- I wonder how American horse people live with the fact that it is to be found in England and not in the USA. ;-)

@MALUSE Well there was racing here when colonisation was only just starting in America. Not everything is bigger and better there

@jaboUK I know an English woman who visited Hampton Court with friends from Canada. When they were walking around, she told them that the lawn there was older than their country. The Canadians were impressed.

Really interesting! I would never have guessed that there were so many horses in any part of England. That woman leading the horse is quite a looker, by the way. Are you working at the tracks occasionally? It must be such a beautiful area.

@JamesHxstatic Yes, it's a lovely place to live. Unfortunately that 'looker' doesn't look like that any more. Yes I still work at the turnstiles at the track.

Wonderful shot of you, you look so happy. I just looked up Charles II and learned another word, I'd heard it many times but have always ignored it, I didn't know I was a hedonist Uh oh, maybe I better read more about that word

Ummm, somehow I don't think I want to know @jaboUK but to clear that up a bit, I find pleasure in the visual aspect of life which is why I love photography. Can I retract that whole hedonist thing? I'm not into the same kind of hedonist activity that good ole Charles II was probably into.

@rebelann No need to retract it - I suppose most of us are hedonistic to a degree. There's nothing wrong with the pursuit of pleasure, but it shouldn't be the 'be all and end all', should it?

@rebelann Oh yes, I was happy alright - that horse had just won a quite prestigious race. I shouldn't think that you are quite the hedonist that Charles ll was

I can just picture the horses galloping across the fields in majestic splendor. If I ever get the chance to visit, I know my wife would love to see the horses. She's always been a horse lover.

@jaboUK In India Marwari, Kathiawari, Deccani are more popular; they were used as war horses and still have regement in Military. They are also used in Horse sports including racing.

@yugocean All racehorses here are thoroughbreds, and the horse in the picture is long gone. That was taken about 40 years ago and horses don't live that long. Yes, I rode well but haven't been on a horse for a few years now.

That's pretty cool. I didn't realize your involvement with horse racing came about because it was so prevalent in your area and so close too. It would be cool to see that area one day. I'll have to check out that other post too.

@MarshaMusselman No Marsha. my involvement didn't come about because of the area - I'm not a native here. I came here as a bride because my husband lived here - he was a jockey. We met through the horses - I was already working with them.

@SIMPLYD No, I never rode in races, I just rode the horses at home and got them ready and fit for racing. That's a professional jockey in the picture, and when I was young women weren't allowed to ride in races. They can now.

@jaboUK Fort Erie had a thriving racetrack as well as several very busy bingo halls. They had a lot of traffic coming from the US. Then they opened casinos in Niagara Falls and Buffalo, NY. That seemed to start a downward spiral. The rising taxes haven't helped either.
