We Don't Like Gutting Fish!

My niece is married to an Egyptian and she has lived in Luxor since her marriage some 16 or 17 years ago. The four children have all been born in Australia and when they have visited from time to time we've had some great holidays together. In 2013 we went to Horrocks Beach north of Perth, Western Australia. The children's grandparents took the kids fishing and they all managed to catch a fish. Later they had to clean and gut their own fish. This is not something they are used to and I thought the expression of this one's face said it all. We have many memories of their visits. Their father works as a security guard for an airline and from time to time the mother takes advantage of cheaper standby tickets and comes to Australia, often for several months over the Egyptian summer. World events have had a serious impact on the tourist trade in Luxor. Like most parents, my niece and her husband just want to provide a secure and safe future for their children.

I have to say that gutting fish is not top of my list of things to be doing on holiday!

And luckily we're not into fishing either. Straight to the fish-and-chip shop for us! :)

I can kill and dress a chook (chicken) if I have to and cut up a sheep carcass ready to pack in the fridge. That'll do me. I don't need to gut fish.

@JudyEv I have read somewhere some countries just put the whole fish in burning coals wrapped up in aluminium foil and eat the whole thing.

@allknowing I don't know that I'd be very keen on that.

I don't care about gutting fish. I live close to the Yangtze River and the fish is our daily dish.

We don't eat a lot of fish. I'm always afraid of finding bones.

I think that not many people love gutting fish. I know I can ask to the local store to do the job, but I prefer gutting myself the fish I buy. I want to be sure to clean it as we like. I prepare fish quite often.

That's very impressive Anna. It is difficult to get all the bones out but it's good if you are able to do that.

@JudyEv I followed the lessons of a French chef, he was the best I have every seen to clean the fish and remove the bones. I love to buy whole salmons and to make Gravlax at home. I must be sure there are no bones left.

@LadyDuck The bones are what worries me. It is good if you are able to fillet the fish yourself. That's why I like fish and chips from a shop. There are rarely any bones.

I don't htink that I would want to see anyone gutting fish in front of me , let alone do it myself.

It's what you're used to - or not, isn't it? If you've seen a lot of it, I don't think it affects you so badly. You get used to the sights and smells a little.

Gutting fish is a job I've never done, nor am ever likely to. I do like fish, but buy it already done. I feel for the people who live in those countries targeted by terrorists, it must be dreadful for their economy. We'd never go to Egypt or Tunisia again.

Luxor - and I guess all of Egypt - is really suffering. Any tourists that go seem to stay in the westernised resorts. No-one is visiting the ancient sites. It is really hard for the people - and I can't even bear to think about the horses and donkeys we saw there.

@reskyyandi The kids each ate their own fish. They were only little fish and I hate the thought of getting a bone in my throat so I was happy to go without.

It's not the best job, is it? I guess it depends how much you want to eat a fish. By the way, my post on the boy with the cherry posted twice so I deleted one and it was the one with your comment on. Sorry about that but I didn't want two posts up. The one I deleted didn't have a photo.
