A foggy morning

A foggy garden
Greece
January 24, 2017 1:58pm CST
This morning I awoke to fog creeping in wisps down the hills surrounding our house, obliterating the world beyond and gradually isolating us. I was reminded of the fogs I encountered when I was a schoolgirl in London. In our ignorance we thought it was exciting to make our way to school in fog so thick we could hardly make out the pavement from the road. We knew enough to cover mouths and noses with our thick green school scarves, we knew they were the kind of fogs that were polluted by smoke and had acquired the name ‘smogs’. Those fogs were yellow and literally killers containing chemicals from chimneys and factories which mixed with water and air and formed sulphuric acid. The so called ‘Great Smog’ of London in 1952 killed thousands. By comparison the white fog around me this morning had a fairylike quality, no hidden threats no nasty chemicals, just a curtain obscuring my view.

I've heard about smog of course, but never encountered it myself. I've never lived in a city, nor ever wanted to. As you say, a country fog is completely different.

I bet the 'white' fog must bring back some memories of the yellow kind. Ugh! I enjoy the white fog we have here. I live near the river so we get it quite a bit.

In fact I can't tell the difference between fog and smog. They are so alike. But here some cities suffers the smog problem. The pollution is serious. I hope people can realize how serious it is and do something to protect our environment.

I pity people living under such conditions - clean air is essential for food health. 4

I have heard about those terrible smogs in London back then. Glad it is better now. The curtain is not so bad and I like to see it moving around trees and other objects.

A nice real fog is so different from smog. I see the smog every time I go to see my mother in Milan, but I remember the fog when I was a young girl. I loved the humid curtain covering the view in front of me, I have always loved the fog.

That would have been very nasty during those years in London. We get fog here occasionally but it's all white!
