Wise heads on old shoulders.

A question in a post by MysD made me think about how attitudes change as we grow older. I asked myself about my own attitudes and I have to admit that there are some changes in my attitudes due to my age. I have noticed, for instance, that I have only a passing interest in future technological advances. I use a cell phone and the internet but only in ways that are convenient for me, I have not bothered to investigate all the benefits it might offer. I am content with what I have and what I have is already more than I can handle. I have a dislike of programmes about future smart cars and I know exactly why. I would love to have a smart car to drive me where I want to go or check on my driving or the traffic around me, but it isn’t going to happen in a big way in the near future. So I am satisfied with my automatic car that beeps when I reverse badly, tells me that the brake is still on when I start off in a hurry and reminds me to turn off the lights when I vacate the car etc. I am much more tolerant of younger people now because time has given me hindsight into my own shortcomings when I was young. I may still judge my peers who are “old enough to know better” but the younger ones I know still have a lot to learn and, like me, they will learn most of it the hard way. It is a loss that wise heads have to wait until we go grey.

I can relate to all of this. Who was it said 'Youth is wasted on the young'? I think that is the correct quote. It's very true anyway.

It is attributed to George Bernard Shaw but some think it might have been Oscar Wilde.

Some of these smart cars scare me. They have some that drive for you. I can't see me riding in one of these. Reminds me of the cartoon of the drivers lesson with the teacher pressing down constantly on the break lever. Wise heads don't have to wait that long. Some don't grey until much later. The youth of today is so much smarter than I was.

They know more of course and I would say they are better educated than their parents in many cases but wisdom gets acquired in life not the classroom.

@41CombedaleRoad ......That is true. An education and actual wisdom are two different things.

I can relate to this. I don't have a fancy phone cause I have tried to use my son's and it is a pain. I don't let things bother me like I used to which is good. I have always gotten along with younger people and now I do pay more attention to what a lot of them say.

@41CombedaleRoad I will probably have to get used to them some day.

Smart phones do take a lot of getting used to I must admit. I struggle with mine too.

The years have mellowed us.No wonder some people say knowledge of self increases as one gets older.

So true and I have to agree. My wisdom came as the grey appeared .

This is usually the case but a hard one for the young to accept who think they know everything initially.

A while back, I thought I really needed to lean how to use Twitter. I finally decided I really have no interest in it. As we age, some things just aren't as important.
