Had to clean out my desk at one of my jobs yesterday

Have you ever experienced that sad feeling when you get fired or laid off? You have to clean out your desk and put your stuff in a box, and then take that slow walk to your car. Yesterday, I was reminded of that feeling at my afternoon kid job. Sorting through old papers, throwing some out, putting all my "keeper" stuff in a box. Fortunately, in this case, it was only because they're giving me a new and nicer desk. It'll be there today, and then I can figure out where everything goes.

Nice plot twist, you had me believing you were put out to pasture.

I'm so glad you weren't fired or laid off, just changing desks. I hope it's a nicer desk.

For a moment I thought you had lost your job as the little boy or girl is crying so much. So you get a newer desk that is better then and glad you are still in your actual Job.

Well I am glad it's just so you can have a new desk. =) I have had that feeling before but not because of being fired or laid off, we were moving to another state so I had to leave my job. I loved that job so it was a sad day for me.

Change is hard. It's stressful and hard on the body. I'm glad I have thee jobs now where I've been there long enough to feel "comfortable." I don't really like "change."

You had me going for a minute. I was ready to offer my condolences. I'm glad it is just a furniture change and you didn't have to take that long walk. I've left many jobs for better jobs, but I've only been laid off once, when my position was not included in the next year's budget because it turned out the outgoing governor had been a tad optimistic about how much revenue there was going to be. It worked out, though. That was my last accounting job and I've been a teacher ever since.

@TheHorse I enjoyed the auditing aspect of accounting, getting out into the companies and learning all about how they produce their products. But most of it was boringly repetitious and I grew very disturbed by the lies people would tell on their taxes to get out of paying their share.

@DWDavis I get angry/sad when I encounter the darker side of human nature in my work as well, be it plagiarizers at the College, or irresponsible parents in the kid work.

I find being a teacher really rewarding. Did you enjoy accounting? Monty Pyhon used to poke fun at accountants.

Two and a half years ago I closed my store. It was a well organized well planned closing. Then six months later I sold the building...that was a bit crazier. We had sold our house and we're moving at the same time. There was simply no time yo get emotional.

Sometimes it doesn't sink in until later. Was the transition to the new house rewarding?

@TheHorse we've been here almost two years....where has the time gone. It was a good decision, but it took almost a year and a half for life to settle enough fir it to feel rewarding.

No, I've never had to pack up at a job. I always figured the job was the job and home was home and I did not want them inter-mingling. When I lost a job all I had to do was get up and walk out. Most of my work prior to having a family (I got to be a stay at home mom) was at answering services where I shared my work space with other shifts and we never left personal things. After my divorce I worked temp jobs so never took anything personal to work. The illustration you chose is heartbreaking, I hope the tears were gone quickly!

You do get used to one thing and then there's always that end of an era feeling. Glad it's only a nicer desk that awaits.

Good description: End of an era feeling. I can relate to that around each job I've left. I'm actually pretty devoted and haven't had/left THAT many jobs.

How nice! Nice to clean out the old though. Sad feeling of being fired or laid off? Only happened once and I was so happy to be gone from there. What a mess!

@TheHorse - Made me smile, this one did. Also caused me to think back onto the first time I was fired from a job - for real and not just moving to "another desk." I was 14 years old and I laughed at something the boss did. One minute later I was a "gone chicken." -Gus-

I was ticked off when I got lad off at the rehab program in Oakland. I'd Been there longer than anyone else, and was sort of the backbone of the place. They didn't throw a part for me or anything (even though I don't like parties).

Walking the plank with weights on. I've only had to do that a couple of times. Once it was because I refused to sleep with the boss. Life is strange.
