Last week I spent a couple of days in Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand. I go down several times a year, simply to have a change of scenery and recharge my batteries. This trip, as I often do, I spent a lot of time wandering the streets and browsing the local book shops. I have two favourites, one an award-winning independent book shop, the other an independent secondhand book shop. I spent quite a bit of time in these two, trying to curb my enthusiasm to match my budget. I came home with a bag of books that have already given me a lot of pleasure and will keep me in reading material for some time yet. As well as the book shops I enjoyed lots of good food and coffee while I was away.

There's nothing like Wellington on a good day @garymarsh6 - but on a wild stormy day it's a different kind of beauty!

I was thinking the same thing. Very reminiscent of the Cote D'Azur of france.

Going to book shops is a favorite past time of mine as well. I can spend the whole day just browsing through the countless books and lose myself in other worlds.

The longer I stay, the more difficult it is to make decisions!

I like to look through book stores and see all the used and new books that they have in there.

I wished I had more money to spend, making choices was difficult, but at least I stuck to my budget.

To me, there is nothing more satisfying than good food and a good book.

When I was young I spent a lot of time browsing second hand book shops, although I stopped reading books once my eyesight deteriorated.

I like that scenery. Are those houses built on slopes? How does one get to the top?

@valmnz There was this hotel we were staying in Switzerland that was on a hill top. There was the funicular that we had to use to get up there. There were steps as well.

@allknowing some have steep driveways, some you reach from the tiny streets above and one or two have private lifts. Wellington is a very hilly city!

I have a little reserve fund for such things as books when I go to Wellington - it now needs replenishing before I can repeat the experience!

What a lovely way to spend a few days. We rarely buy a new book nowadays. There are always second-hand ones around, either at the library or in our own second-hand bookshop.

Are there that many book stores remaining? They are a dying breed in this Amazon dominated world.

New Zealand has a thriving book store culture. Yes, there are book shops, dealing in both new and secondhand books, wherever you go.

@valmnz Can there be anything as deeply satisfying as a good browse in a bookshop followed by a good sit in a café? No, I didn't think so. I have to limit my browsing these days as too much standing now hurts my back considerably. That's sounds like a very nutritive, restorative few days you had.
