A Blast from the Past

I came across this photo the other day and thought you might like it. This particular sheep is called Baa-sil. We thought it was a 'boy' but it turned to be a ewe but the name had stuck by then. She was in a flock of sheep which were running on our place but didn't belong to us. She loved her food and quickly became very tame once we started giving them a few oats from time to time. When the owner took the others, he left Baa-sil with us. We brought her to this place but she died a year or two later. I am trying to encourage Herc to stand up like this for his piece of bread but so far he just does little hops. I think he might be a slow learner.

@judyev That reminds me of a photo I used to have of me and the Pyreneean Mountain dog I used to have. He loved to stand on his hind legs with his front paws on my shoulders and slobber over me.

@JudyEv He ate mountains of food and left mountainous deposits behind him for me to clear up.

@xFiacre Oh course! I forgot about deposits. What goes in must eventually come out. At least sheep usually do hard little pebbles.

They are massive dogs. He probably ate more than you did! I can't stand dog slobber. Sheep are much better. :)

@allen0187 I have a few posts about Herc. If you search on myLot for 'Hercules' those posts should come up.

I'm going to have to find someplace that has sheep around here, I am trying to imagine how big they are. So far I've been close enough to horses to get an idea of how big they are but that's about it, I figure cattle are about the same size. I have to say that the ewe looks fairly large to me.

Is that your daughter @JudyEv ? That sheep looks like she's at least as big as a great dane, now those I have seen.

I guess all domestic animals vary in size (to each other). Certainly some cattle are as big as horses. Sheep of course are smaller but some can still be quite large and hefty.

Baa-sil is a funny but very appropriate name for a sheep. This one is cute, show the photo to Herc, a photo is worth a thousand words.

That's SO TRUE! I'd be forever making him do it for people! But only because I want them to admire how clever he is. You are very astute.

What is the normal longevity of sheep? Being heavy as he is it might not be easy for Herc to do what you want him to do.

I think Ron Rybs (@Ronrybs) has explained it. He says if Herc does it once, I'll be expecting him to do it every time.

You're probably right although he steps up high with his front feet as if he's doing a Spanish walk. Hasn't quite got the hang of rearing up though. :)

They will sometimes rear up under a tree if they are keen to eat the leaves. Goats do it a lot too.

She was a big girl! How old was she when she passed away? Herc will get it sooner or later. From the sounds if it, it will be later! Is the bread his favorite treat? Maybe if you up the ante he will work a little harder.
