It's Just What We Need!

My husband, Vince, and I have been around a long time and we've had ample opportunity to accumulate a whole host of various items, some of which have had little use and many of which have had a lot of use. However whenever we go to a garage (yard) sale we invariably find something that we didn't know we needed. And how lucky were we to come across such an item? One of these lucky finds was a set of poker chips, all stacked neatly in a very nice lockable carry-case. Each chip has the denomination stamped on it. I think we paid $5 for the set and we've had some great games of poker since. It always goes with us at New Year when we gather for several days with some friends. Do you ever come across things you didn't know you needed until you saw them?

I do find items that I need and when I do I think it is the start of a good day for me. A good price on a frying pan that would have cost nearly 50 dollars new or better. Then there was a time I found this very useful French Press to make my coffee. It was in perfect condition. Thrift Stores are indeed good places to shop.

Sometimes the items are amazingly cheap. I love getting a bargain. I guess most people do.

Too many times, we avoid to go to flea markets because we always end up buying something. I have a very similar poker chips carry-case.

@JudyEv I have more or less the same problem, so it's better we do not go.

@LadyDuck We haven't been for ages now. We really try to avoid buying unnecessary items.

This happens to us too. And if we go to a garage sale and there is no-one there, I find it hard not to buy something just to make the person feel better. :)

I wonder if the person who sold these used them much as they look like new! What a pretty set. I have never played poker.

@JudyEv For a song? Is that an expression?

They looked brand new. And we bought them for a song so we were very pleased.

@shaggin Yes it is! These expressions keep coming up! I just read about something 'getting up someone's nose' but I can't find an origin for that one.

That's a nice set. I sometimes find things I don't need and yet they are useful at times for entertainment or other.

@JudyEv I went to a thrift store a couple days ago and found a very beautiful tea cup from England that was $6.99. I just felt a pull to take it for my shelf. At the counter, she charged me .99 and said it was discounted. I didn't need it but that little cup sitting near my books, makes me smile when I look at it.

@noni1959 And for .99c that's all it needs to do. That is a very cheap smile - and I mean that in the best way. :)

That's very true. If you pick something up for a song it doesn't matter that it won't be used much. Other times we pick up something that becomes really useful.

That's great! I often buy oddball things but only rarely does it turn out so well as yours! Enjoy!

We pick up the odd tool too that comes in very handy from time to time but you don't really want to fork out for a brand new one.

I never really went to garage sales. I always wanted to go and see what I can find. But the spring is going to come soon so I might just go around looking. Although they are not that easy to find here in the city like they are outside the city.

My friend always liked to garage sales in the expensive suburbs. She always thought you got much better items in expensive areas. She was probably right.

@JudyEv I think she is right. I worked with a guy year ago, he worked for the sewer department here in NYC and I worked with the water supply. And he used to go on calls there in the rich areas and found awesome things they would just throw away. And almost brand new. So, your friend is correct.

The other day I found my old smartphone. It is not a good phone but I figured I can use it as a monitor for my baby when she starts sleeping in her own room. All I need to do is download an app for that then I can see and hear her on my phone anywhere in the house

I rarely do, but my wife often notices things she never knew she needed, or even knew existed, and once she sees them just has to have them. Hence, the giant hen in a dress that covers our vacuum cleaner.

@judyev Oh the shops are full of stuff I didn't know I needed and they very helpfully point it out every time my wife passes them.

I never went to garage sales until I helped a friend in Denver with a couple, and they were really fun. Now I check them out sometimes. Last summer we got a big cat crate for ten bucks.
