My buddy sat on the potty for me today!

I've written before about my young friend who has expressive aphasia. He is 2 1/2, and understands everything, but he doesn't speak. Today, as I was changing his diaper (no poop), he tapped his hip twice and pointed to the potty and said something I couldn't understand. I said, "Are you serious? You want to sit on the potty?" He nodded his head enthusiastically and said what would have been "yes" if he did consonants. I helped him climb up and he sat there beaming. I said, "You're sitting on the potty, just like the biggest boys do!" He laughed and then concentrated. And then his face turned red. He was actually trying to poop! No poop came out, but as I was helping get his pants, socks and shoes back on, he was giggling uncontrollably. He knew he had just done something really special. I don't know when he's going to speak, but I predict he's going to be housebroken within a couple of months!

He seems to be responding well to more things. Best when housebroken.

It's strange the things that can make us happy. If this guy poops in the potty for me, or utters his first words beyond "yes" and "no" for me, I'm going to be ecstatic.

He likes to clean stuff, so one of our "bonding" things is to clean together. If someone spills milk at lunch, we'll sponge it up together. When we're outside, we'll sweep together. He's a lot of fun.

I love seeing the joy on their faces over what are "little things" to us grown-ups.

@allknowing I think that's true. And some people just make them feel "safe," whatever that is.

I saw him on Thursday, but I was volunteering with the older kids that day, so we were mostly outside when we interacted. We had no school yesterday--a training instead.

@JudyEv Heh heh. Yep. Gotta get 'em housebroken. Our preschool is a wonderful place for kids to start out. Everything abut the place is positive and "developmentally appropriate."

We do a lot of stuff together. And I talk to him a lot. I asked him a lot of closed-ended questions (he knows how to nod his head "yes" and "no"), and then up the ante with open-ended questions.

@TheHorse That's a sound basis you're building. I'm sure it's only a matter of time - and I love the thought of 'house-broken'. :)

As @JustBhem said, we just have to be supportive and patient and let things unfold at their own pace.

Thank you for sharing this happy story. It reminds me of my nephew who rarely spoke when he was little because his two older sisters always spoke up for him. My sister-in-law finally had to put her foot down to make them stop so he could learn to speak up for himself. Even today, he's a man of few words.

My young friend may be pretty talkative when he finally starts speaking. He does like to express himself. But he does it in his own way. We shall see. He loves preschool, so I think he'll be with us for at least a couple more years.

Yep. "Just keep swimming" and one learns new things. I'm glad he wants to try the potty thing. It could mean he'll be willing to try the speaking thing when he's ready.

Do you mean so you wouldn't have to? Or do you mean pee on command? So potty training would be easy?
