You don't want clogged pipes now do you?

When the weatherman said the temps would be below freezing last night I said it was time to leave a faucet dripping in order to prevent water line freeze. Such a thing could be costly and avoiding it is a simple matter. While having plumbing on my mind I just ran across an article from from Southern Living Magazine that deals with clogged pipes and some foods that we need to be mindful of. In order not to reinvent the wheel, I am attaching the link for the article. But just as a quick peek let's say that coffee grinds, butter and flour are bad news for pipes. You might want to check this article out as it is full of good information. Photo: from Pixabay

@AbbyGreenhill OhWell. Some people do have to use a trickle to keep not frozen. When we first moved here.We had to have a hose out back to let the water run. This is from the town.Later in years. They fixed this and no problem. But at first it was a pain

I let the taps drip and then it got so cold at night that they froze anyway- plumber said the taps should have streams of water coming out not drips. About drains: think also about septic tanks. My hubby says I should not use bleach type cleaners cause they could harm that tank- cleaning and repairing tanks is a huge, huge bill.

The plumber we had a few weeks ago for out outside leak - said drip - we only go low a night or two at a time here. I don't use bleach at all but. I've never heard of a septic tank going bad due to bleach usage. They go 'bad' if you don't use RidEX.

@AbbyGreenhill We had unexpected sudden night horrors this year- the plumber said it got down to 18 below for about a week. He fixed the freeze on the pipes then turned our taps on to pouring out water and said to leave it or he'd have to come back and our bill would reflect that.

The most effective item that I have known for clearing blocked pipes was the stuff that I used to use for the pub that I ran.

@AbbyGreenhill It is about 35 years since I managed a pub, so I cannot remember the name of it. In fact, it may not even be available to the general public.

That is a very interesting article. I already knew that about cooking oil. Concerning egg shells, the thought never crossed my mind to put them down the drain. I am surprised anyone would do it. *I am going to post it on Facebook.

@AbbyGreenhill I have never had a garbage disposal.

I think they meant putting egg shells in your disposal. I don't have a disposal and don't miss it - when we had them I usually jammed them!

Thank you for the link. All solid fats are bad, my coffee grinds go into the compost, they are great as fertilizer.

@AbbyGreenhill I think that some grains of rice can do no damage. Time by time I pour a cup of baking soda in the drain and then I pour warm vinegar over it.

@LadyDuck What does the baking soda and vinegar do?

I don't purposely put those things down the sink, but I know for a fact a noodle and some grains of rice escape to the great unknown. Never got into composting and with our garden it's not something we need.

I have lived in some homes where we seemed to constantly have stopped up sinks . Fortunately it hasn't been an issue in this home. Then again we are the first owners

One of my clients put some crazy things down her drains. I was constantly trying to unclog the drains. One thing that was the main problem was coffee grounds. Horrible to get them out of a clogged drain.

You would 'assume' since coffee grinds are tiny they would flow right thru.

Wow! That's too costly too water bills! And I think we all need water in draught, but anyway I don't really know what to do best. I just hope technology of today can find answer and breakthroughs to this problems. God bless.

oh so this is one way of clogging out the pipe. We don't experience clogging because we don't have winter here but we experience scarcity of water during summer.
