Shrove Tuesday and We Have to Miss It

Darn! I'm not sure I've ever missed a Shrove Tuesday at church. We have to though. I had thought we could miss the first game in our bowling league so we could go. I found out that we can't. We are missing a team member and there has to be 3 players there for the games to count. For most years of our Tuesday night bowling it was all family on the team so it was easy to say we're doing this and we will make up the games. This time around it's just me and hubby and the other 2 guys on the team. I totally spaced it off last Tuesday or I could have talked to them about missing tonight and making the games up. For those who don't know Shrove Tuesday is the day before Lent starts in the church season. Some churches call it Fat Tuesday. At our church it almost always biscuits and gravy that's served. You can eat and eat all you want before Lent starts and you give something up for Lent. I don't know much other than that....I know growing up that Catholics only ate fish on Friday's during Lent. The pastor had a good sermon on Lent this past Sunday. I took a lot from it, but mostly that it doesn't have to be some type of food that you give up for Lent. I have chosen to give up computer time each day for more Bible reading time. I'm hoping after the 40 days of Lent it will be a habit that I stick to. Some years back I tried giving up chocolate for Lent. I was kicking myself after church one Sunday at fellowship time. Someone brought brownies. I didn't think about it and just ate one. I learned something new that Sunday......the 40 days of Lent do not count Sunday's. Now, of course pastor told me that most people give things up for the entire time of Lent, but not to be so hard on myself because Sunday's don't count. I've never really tried too hard at actually giving something up for Lent before that year, and haven't since. This is a good year to start and be serious about it.

I read one post yesterday that was written last year where they said fish on Friday then light meals all meals for the 40 days. I found that interesting. Yeah, I wasn't happy....I think I told everyone that I really wanted to be at church. One lady at Bible study yesterday told me not to feel bad about it. It wasn't a service, just a meal and social time and that I will be at the Ash Wednesday service tonight and that is the important one.

I've only heard the term 'Fat Tuesday'. I think it would make it harder to give things up if you were able to eat them on Sundays.

We also celebrate Fat Tuesday today, we have Carnival parades and fried food and cakes are offered all the day, before the Lent starts.

I've never participated in the giving something up for Lent thing, not even when I was in the Lutheran church. Back then the only thing we did was go to church on Wednesday evening. This year however, I'm doing something for these 40 days, and that is working on my novel and focusing on it and giving up some time on myLot to get it done. I'll still be on the computer, just in a different capacity.

We will have Lent services on Wednesdays...you just reminded me. I can only assume they have that all taken care of. Last year I did one of the services, but no one has asked me anything about it this year and that will start next week.

I read somewhere today that there is a movement or idea of doing a good deed daily instead of giving up something like food, for Lent. I think I would choose to give up something like being anxious, or having a bad attitude for lent. I did not grow up in a tradition of giving something up for Lent, though I had many Catholic friends who did,

The pastor that we have for our 4th Sunday's now is not Lutheran. She is the chaplain at the hospital. She does a great job in her sermons the 2 times she's been with us so far. I took away a lot from her sermon on Lent.

Good luck with Lent. I'm still giving up using salty foods and try to do steamed vegetables for my meals. Not sure if my church has Shrove Tuesday. But tomorrow there's an Ash Wednesday dinner service I'm going to.

@KristenH We used to have soup suppers each Wednesday through Lent, but with so few really active members now they stopped doing that a couple of years ago. It was the same people always having to volunteer to make the soups.....I sure miss those.

@marsha32 Bummer. At least you have something. Supper is 3 soups from crockpots, salad and baked bread.

I usually make pancakes for dinner on Shrove Tuesday, but didn't tonight... we had pancakes for dinner just the other day (I wasn't even thinking about what today was then) and it's a bit of work to juggle pancake making with an active little boy scrambling all over the place. I guess I'm giving up stressing myself out for Lent.
