I nearly cooked a chicken

I've written about the pets we had when I was a child. When we were married and living in a small, isolated country town we acquired a baby bantam chicken. Its mother left it behind in some wet grass and by the time we found it, it was very cold and almost on its last legs.
I dropped it into a soft sock and sat it on a hot water-bottle. When I checked it about ten minutes later it was well and truly alive but had its little beak open panting. I'd nearly cooked it! The Beak as we called it thrived and liked to spend her evenings sitting in the crook of an ankle watching TV with the family.
Sometimes she would work her way up to a shoulder or would be quite happy to sit on top of someone's head and settle down.
The Beak also loved elastic bands and perhaps thought they were worms. We had several bands strung together. She would grab one end in her beak and you could swing her off the ground and round in circles but she wouldn't let go. Eventually she went to live with my mother and raised many a batch of chickens of her own.
We don't have a photo of The Beak but here is Bunty being a circus sheep and standing on a rock.

When I was little, my father rescued a handful of baby ducks and brought them home to care for them. I loved playing with those little ducklings, because they would follow me around everywhere I went! They quickly became part of the family, and I remember crying for days when they were finally old enough to be on their own. My father rounded them all up (it was easy because they followed him right into the truck) and he drove them out to a lake to release them back into the wild. As soon as those ducks saw the water they took off running toward it, quickly forgetting about their human family! haha

I have seen photos of a heap of ducklings toddling after a golden Labrador. How sad that you had to give them up but of course it was the best thing for them. It strokes the ego doesn't it to have an animal tagging along behind as though you're the most important thing in its tiny life.

@JudyEv I will admit, I did enjoy having all those little ducklings fallowing me around all the time! It was like a game of Follow the Leader!

This seemed amusing. Just imagine how excited they probably were when seeing the water it just tickles you

I don't think having a chicken and the poop associated would make me want to invite one inside LOL!

Maybe she was a bullchick by the way she wouldn't let go of the elastic.

It always feels good to save an animal's life even if it is only a chicken.

Oh that's so sweet. I didn't know chickens could be tamed. I think I will struggle with eating chicken now. Is that you, with bunty?

Yes, that's me. I should have said. We were brought up on a farm and eating your own meat was what you did. We never ate pets though.

Yes, that's me - many years ago!
I do hope you enjoy having a cat. How old is your son?
