Today was a dangerous day for me.

United States
March 7, 2017 11:33pm CST
From 5 am when I went to try to sleep, until about 2 pm, I kept waking up. I would sleep for 5 minutes, sometimes up to 20 but I was awake soon after. That's dangerous in and of itself. However, I'd pop a cough drop in my mouth,, sure that I'd stay awake. My body was tired, but I didn't really feel tired. I don't know if that makes sense. It wasn't that my mind was completely active, but neither was my body tired either. In any case, I'd wake up and the cough drop would be in my mouth still. I'd look at the clock and not much time had passed. I kept telling myself not to go to sleep until the cough drop melted. I knew how dangerous it could be if I swallowed it. I wasn't waking up because I was coughing, so I must have woke up because I stopped breathing. I didn't actually get any sleep until around 1 or 2 pm when I finally fell asleep and stayed asleep until 5 or 6. I tell you, my brain was active. I can remember having really deep thoughts about things, but I never did grasp onto any of it. I was always surprised by how deep of a sleep I'd fall into but be awake only five minutes later. Our brains are wonderous things. I've read about how stress can have an impact on our brains, how lack of sleep can do the same. How it isn't healthy for us not to get plenty of sleep.

I have several nights where I cannot sleep and I continue to wake up, the day after you are more tired if you had not even touched your bed.

I was eventually able to sleep fully, which I was glad. Those days after a very tumultuous sleep are awful! I used to work for a company that had me there nearly every day for so many hours. Sleep was often only a few hours, and whenever I could nod off between tasks.

@LadyDuck I am glad to have very few of those myself! Generally only when I feel ill, or uncomfortable.

@ScribbledAdNauseum A good sleep is important to be alert the day after. I hate those nights that I turn and toss all the time.

It was! Glad that's over. I can sleep through without much problems. I wake up coughing but fall back asleep and stay that way until I'm rested.

There are sleep inducing therapies. You can go for one of those. Just search the Net and you will find them.

I was sleeping, just very fitfully. I never woke up out of breath, but I didn't wake up choking either. I still assume I was waking up because I stopped breathing.

@infatuatedbby I hope so! I'm already lost for what day it is, but being sick and sleeping off kilter isn't helping. Thank YOu.

The only time I have trouble is when I am sick or am aching. I think this is the first time in years I've had fitful sleep like that.

I will do a lot of sleeping tomorrow since I am being sedated for another root canal tomorrow afternoon. I will also be starving since I can't eat anything all day until it is over, and then I will just go to bed until my jaw thaws out. I hope you get some good healthy sleep and that you get well so you won't need the cough drops.

@bagarad That would be quite a reward, wouldn't it? I could do with having my mouth wired shut for all the snacking I do!

The congestion is moving out of my chest, or so it seems. I sure hope it is! I hope you've had a big meal so it will tide you over. I am sure after all that work done, you won't have an appetite though.

Lake of sleep and cause stress as well as pain from injuries and medical conditions can cause stress too! I sleep like that every night but not from coughing or with a drop in my mouth. That is dangerous!

I wasn't "in my right mind" so to speak. I was aware that I wasn't getting much sleep, but I felt more alert than I actually was. I thought, each time I put a cough drop in my mouth, that I was awake enough to stay that way.

@dfollin Yes it was. I put about three cough drops in (not at the same time) before I realized it's best I just don't. I was lucky each time I awoke with it still in my mouth! As I said, I may have woken up every few minutes, but it takes only a second to choke !

Our brains are wonderful things. When people actually use them you can almost see the smoke.

@ScribbledAdNauseum ....THis is true. Women need to go with their gut feelings about things. I am working on that even at my age. I think it has to do with self esteem and trusting ourselves.

That's the problem sometimes, isn't it? We don't always use our brains. Sometimes we let our hearts rule us. When we should let our brains (logic) do the talking.

@celticeagle I think you are right. Self esteem plays a big role in it, but sometimes it's just merely that our hearts (compassion) takes precedent over the logical part of our brains.

Yep, it's not a good idea to be taking cough drops when you are also trying to sleep at the same time, as you could choke. They are a waste of time anyway. You would be better of with a honey and lemon linctus which is also safe. Lack of sleep is a problem I have too. Usually too much on my mind.

linctus? The cough drops were actually honey and lemon flavored. I kept thinking I could stay awake, but I'd doze off for just a moment. I don't normally have sleeping problems.

I'd be inclined to assume that the part of your brain which senses danger kept prodding you awake to ensure you didn't choke. I'm always amazed at how I can have extensive and lengthy dreams in the five minutes between my alarm going off and the snooze-y bit jerking me awake again.

We actually do not start dreaming until right before we awaken. A dream that can seem hours long are merely 30 second intervals. I read that somewhere. I think you are right, part of my brain kept saying "Danger Will Robinson! Danger!"
