I Just Saved A Life

I just saved a life. I was sweeping the side verandah as the leaves have been blowing in and we have guests arriving tomorrow. I glanced in a bin that is half-full of potting mix and saw a young skink. We see a lot of these around our house in south-west Western Australia. And we've had them do similar things before. They manage to clamber into the outside wash-basin or a container of some sort but then can't get themselves out. I wasn't sure this one was alive but I carried the bin the few steps to the dirt and tipped it over. The skink scuttled out but only enough to be clear of the bin. I went into the shade-house, found an old saucer, filled it with water and took it out to the skink. Normally they don't hang around but this one just sat there. I placed the saucer about a foot from him then very gently pushed it right under his chin. Once the water touched his mouth he started to drink. He has since moved into the shade-house and I've thrown some small pieces of bread near him. Hopefully he will survive. It's always a good feeling to save something's life.

Nice to know that some people still care about the welfare of such creatures.

@Asylum I'm hoping I might be able to tame this one, seeing I saved his life.

You are such a sweetheart Judy. I have saved so many lizards, they do the same, they enter inside the bins and then they are unable to get out.

Thanks. I try to keep containers upside down or with lids on but after some months I forget again.

Yes it would @JudyEv We have the horned toads here who dine on ants regularly but I no longer have any in my own yard, darn it.

So a skink is similar to a lizard?

I guess they are just a big lizard. I must do some research one day and find out the differences - if there are any.

@Ronrybs He was outside the shade-house later so I think he'll be okay. I didn't see him today but I didn't really look and it would be a pretty hopeless proposition anyway.

He would probably have preferred mince but I wanted to get something for him before he disappeared. It seems he ate nearly all of it.

He's a creepy looking little guy, like a cross between a snake and a lizard.

I've never heard of a skink. Is it in the lizard family?

They are usually very, very timid so he must have been quite distressed not to run away.

These look a lot like our Salamanders here in the states. So what do they do besides hang around your place?

I've only ever seen them hanging around our place. I guess they eat insects or whatever in the bush and just live skink lives.

It is a good feeling.. I've rescued a few rodents that wandered into the house and were cornered by the cats. Usually with mice I let the cats have at it.. but something like a chipmunk I might try to help it out..

@JudyEv My dog who thinks he's a cat caught a really large mouse the other day. We don't normally get such big mice, normally they're tiny things, like maybe an inch or two long, not much bigger than a tube of lipstick. But this one was actually pretty large, at least the size of a toilet paper roll. I thought it was a rat and made hubby dispose of the body. He said it wasn't a rat but I'm not sure I believe him. I'm completely freaked out.

@katsmeow1213 I don't like rats - or probably even big mice! They don't worry me that much but I don't like them.
