Now That it's March, I think I'll Take a Break

March Break is a time when the elementary schools in Ontario all have a Spring Break from school. Parents go a little crazy trying to figure out what to do if they work to have their children cared for during this time. I just used to either take the whole week off from work or figure out some daycare for at least part of it. For the rest of us, March Break usually is a time where the cost of travelling anywhere warm is pumped way up as usual, so the travel business can make as much money as they can from the extra load of travelling students, parents and teachers. For the rest of us, it's best to not even attempt to travel. More expensive and very busy. Malls and any fun places are super busy too. My daughter teaches and she decided to take my granddaughter to the fabulous museum in downtown Toronto for the day. I'm sure many other parents did the same. I know in the US they have Spring Break in February which is another time to limit your travel as prices and 'busy-ness' are all at an extreme. Do you have a time such as this in your area? By the way, it has always been strange but March Break has always been a super warm week for some reason, but this year we are having winter for the week. After a relatively mild winter we are now experiencing below freezing and huge snow storms- not much fun for the kids!

Our kids will get Spring Break next month - in April! I actually love it because we get a whole week of not having to rush off to school in the morning (which can sometimes be a bear!) - and then we get to do fun things (though many other schools will have their Spring Break too so it'll be crowded anyway). We had a little getaway over winter, so most likely we will only be doing local things in around town - no vacationing for us.

There are so many different dates for Spring Break that it would be hard to avoid them all if you were travelling- wait till late April I guess and the prices will go down!

Our sleepy little seaside towns become a hive of activity in the summer and at other holiday periods. It's really best to stay home at those times if you have the option.

True and you have to look out for other Spring Breaks as you travel or you could get caught like we did once going to the States!

For kids around here, March Break was last week. But since my kids are all daycare, I'm not affected by it yet. Next year, it will be a different matter, as my eldest will be starting kindergarten in September. It'll be interesting.

@MarymargII I'm sure I will be fine. It'll be nice that I'll be here for her. Even though I do work, I work from home and I chose my schedule. So I can make my schedule around theirs.

@dodo19 Well, that's a wonderful situation as a mom- to work from home and able to plan your schedule.

Well, you'll be fine as you are at home, and will be there for her (?) but if you ever work, it's a lot harder.

I know that this was the time of the year we avoided to come to the United States. Here the Spring breaks are not long, only one week for Easter.

@MarymargII We always went to Florida in February because the Spring breaks started at the beginning of March and we went back home before the students came down to the beaches.

This one in Canada is only one week, too. And is always around the second or third week in March. Spring Break in the US is usually late February!

@LadyDuck Did you go to Florida from Italy/Switzerland? It's quite the flight isn't it?

Yes, we have spring breaks, but the school system I used to teach in did away with them for February. Another reason I retired. Our son went to a private school and had his with the college kids. The prices were always higher, but I still loved my vacations away from the cold.

True and if you went to different places it isn't so bad. Hard to believe the schools got rid of Spring break!

@MarymargII The parents were all for it, as were the teachers. The long breaks broke up the continuity of preparing for Mastery testing. The do receive two long weekends instead for President Day. Not enough time for me! Thank goodness I was able to retire that year.

@DianneN That worked well for you- so you're saying they got two long weekends but no Spring break?

@RubyHawk Seems like it's warming up everywhere and we sure had a warm-ish winter for Ontario Canada- hardly any snow in Southern Ontario so you folks for sure must have been toasty---ha!

@MarymargII We had an unusually hot winter and I expect the same for the coming summer. It's about the right temp to be enjoyable right now.

It is college spring break time here in Florida, but Ocala is not a prime destination. I would not be heading to Orlando.

NO- not a great plan! At this time of year you really have to avoid those Spring Breaks while travelling- would be a good angle for an article for you!

My grandchildren already had their spring breaks but none of them went anywhere. Traveling during spring break can be tricky

You got spring break but in India we got Summer break. The schools will be closed or they will be given holidays. They go to various places on tour. Even parents will be eager to make a move to cool places.

So the summer break is for how long- this March break is just a little break for a week!
