I got smart…..

Or to be exact , I got a smart phone. I am one of those stick –in –the mud type of people who look suspiciously at any new technology which becomes the norm in a surprisingly short time.
So I was quite content with my old keyboard mobile which let me call up people and acted as an alarm clock when needed. Sometimes, I would use a couple of other features like the ‘torchlight’ and calculator.
That was it. Till one day I decided I needed to upgrade. My husband is just the opposite and no sooner than I voiced my thoughts, the new phone was all ordered and paid for.
My friend came over and we went to get a new SIM and a cover for the handset. We had a ladies’ day out complete with lunch and clothes shopping too. “That’s a good beginning” ‘, I thought to myself , as it was a long gap since I did something like that.
The next step was my friends and colleagues telling me about their favourite apps and showing me how to download them. I deleted quite a few I decided I could not handle.
I like an instant messenger app that I find everybody is using. I am more connected to persons these days as people don’t really go in for private emails anymore.
I discovered a video call feature which my husband says makes his colleagues run out of the room when I call because they are scared of my nagging. But that doesn’t stop him blowing kisses to me ( which I suspect is a strategy to stop my tirade ). So that’s all right too.
Then it’s so much easier to call up a taxi using their app instead of haggling with an auto rickshaw driver and so much cheaper too. I regularly use a feature called ”Live train status” on the days I travel.I can plan out my trips to the station. Its very easy to click photos using the camera. And it’s handy to be able to use the internet on the go.
It is a clever phone alright but then sometimes it gets too smart for its own good. It tries to decide what I am going to say. This happens specially, if I am talking in my native language using the English alphabet. It inserts a word of its own .So sometimes the messages go off and I get a ???? in return. It also happens to be rather sensitive and calls up people I have no intention of calling if my fingers accidentally touch a post on a chat or any of the four hundred contacts in my phone . The screen decides to black out at that time so there is the person on the other end saying ,”hello, hello..” while I search frantically for the ‘hang up’ icon. “Sorry”, I mumble, my level of embarrassment depending on my degree of social contact.
So that’s the story of my cell phone evolution. Whats yours? What features do you enjoy in your handset?

My husband has a smart phone, I have an old cell phone that I bring with me when I go outside, just in case I need to make an emergency call or my husband needs to reach me. I love my computer, I have a tablet and I almost never use it, I do not need a new phone.

Now that I have finally embraced the new technology , I am sure there is going to be some new invention and the phone I have will be outdated. But as you said, I am enjoying some of the things I can do with this phone.

I am a simple guy and I got rid of the internet on my phone and just use to call people and sometime a short text like "can you talk". The phone may be smart but I don't want to spend my life on it.

I took a long time to upgrade.
Its best if you can keep things simple but now that my family is scattered all over I admit I like the video call feature too.

I'm a bit wishing I was you. We still only have a land line in the house, all my children have smart phones and they text us all the time to our computer and ipad... We are talking of getting a cell but haven't decided which one we want, i want it for emergencies in the car.

Pains? I can make that easy(ier) for you, if you like?
Since you are already familiar with an iPad, buy an iPhone. The apps are exactly the same, as is the programming! You will not be as frustrated learning how to use it as you will be with an Android phone!

@DaddyEvil We are thinking about it. All my kids have the iPhone but honestly we don't think we would use it enough to make it worth the price. All we need is one for the car. Will it be an iPhone or a throw away....stay tuned...

I use(d) iPhone which I have sort of given up now and became a phone free person. It has been a long time that I have received or made any calls. I used to skip away or throw my phone to the nearest person whenever I received a call. Slowly I completely weened off my phone.

@DaddyEvil Don't worry. Its the common reaction I get other than disbelief. My Mom/ Dad doesn't get it. They used to get angry in the beginning for not answering calls. I tried telling them I didn't like it for some reason. Then I started getting angry when they wouldn't understand my problem. Long story short, I just gave up the device in question altogether.

I was perfectly happy with my flip cell phone then I went on a press trip and everyone else had a smartphone. It made me think I might want one so I did and now I am addicted like everyone else.

I have yet to jump on board whereas my daughters have had one for the last ten years possibly. Maybe not that long but almost. They've used both androids and iphones and like different aspects of both.
I enjoy technology advances, but our budget isn't allowing them just yet. We need to get one or two bills completely paid off before I can consider both of us getting one. Our business could use it as an expense, but the bills still come out of our pocket. One app my girls like is snapchat, but that may be only an iphone app. It's similar to a video in that it's in real-time, I'd imagine your husband could turn down the volume when you call.
Did he already have one and was just waiting on you, or did he wait to get one until your were ready too?
My dumb phone only costs each of us thirty dollars every two months, whereas a smartphone would probably be about eighty dollars per month for each of us.
When you accidentally call people, just tell them new phone before hanging up.

@MarshaMusselman What if I told you that it will only cost you $35 each for your monthly cost? That will give you unlimited talk, text and 5 GB of high speed data. There are no overage costs because you can't go over on your data. When you have used 5 GB, the data stops until you pay for your next 30 days of service.
(You can still use data on your phone through the Wi-Fi setting and it doesn't count against your 5 GB of data through the towers.)
A decent phone would cost you about $50 each. (Check out the LG Rebel 2 with Total Wireless.) That company uses Verizon's towers.
That is the company I use. My monthly use with this company is 200 talk minutes, 2000 texts and about 1/2 a GB through the towers. I do use 6 GB of data through my home Wi-Fi service, though. I happen to use my phone as a book reader. I read 1 full length novel every day.

@DaddyEvil I'll keep that in mind or ask you what might be new by then when we can afford it. Honestly, we can barely afford thirty dollars each every two months. I just recently bought an eleven year old small mini-van with the understanding that I might be able to begin my social security withdrawals as early as this coming January, but found out recently their invitation was a lie. At this point I don't know how we're going to make the payments through the winter months, I certainly can't switch phones until I know we can afford it okay.
We've made some changes too with dropping our TV cable which lowered that bill and we barely eat out, yet funds are still tight every year. At least we've finally paid off an eight year medical bill of my husbands and another one from 2015, so things should improve if our health stays stable enough.

This is a lovely read. I am hanging off getting a smart phone too but I feel I should. I don't want to get too far behind the eight-ball. And I hear people complaining all the time about their phone pre-empting what they want to say.

I like being able to use the internet at a coffee shop etc. I like the camera. I like being able to text and call people and to keep my calendar on it. I have a shopping list on it.
We reduced our service on our landline to make it a bit more economical to each have a smart phone.

Well, well! I do believe I tried to talk you into getting a smartphone not long after we met, ARM... You told me you'd never get a smartphone because you had no use for one!
So.... are you really loving your new phone? LOL!
You are describing two different "problems" when you accidentally call someone but the phone screen goes black so you can't hang up before the call goes through. Would you be interested in me explaining what is actually happening there and how to stop it from happening? (I wouldn't even tease you very much while explaining what was happening... grinning at you!)

He he...You did...It took me a long time .
I have a love and hate relationship with my smartphone.
Enjoying the fact that now we see each other while calling up...Hubby and me...It makes the distance lesser.
I get freaked out when the screen gets black.
I hate the phone changing my words which I type...And yesterday again sent off lots of my photos by mistake to another set of people by mistake..... woosh they just went off...Very embarrassing
Glad you responded...I did think of you when I posted this. And yes, I'd like to know please.
Take care

After passing of class 10 my father bought me a phone it was "Nokia 3310". I used it for alarm and calling also I use to send sms to my teachers and friends. Then in college I bought my first qwerty phone it was from the brand samsung. I don't remember the exact model. That phone had features like facebook, and others. After that say after an year or so the frequency at which I needed to change the phone was high. And at present I am using an ultra smartphone from lenovo. The facilities which fascinates me includes calling, video calls, messages, social networking, camera feature, then calculator and various banking apps. Basically now I carry the world in my pocket.
