Old Sayings

You're so slow you couldn't catch a cold. He's three bricks shy of a load. She's as ugly as forty miles of bad road. You look like you was sent for and couldn't come. He's tight as Dick's hat band. You sound like a dying calf in a gully washer. He don't have both oars in the water. She don't have a lazy bone in her body. He's drunker than a blind owl. He's got more money than Carter has liver pills. Come in, put your feet up and set a spell. When you read these sayings you know I'm a Georgia mountain girl. I heard these and many more growing up. They bring back a lot of good memories. I don't hear them much anymore. We've grown far away from our parents and grand parents day.

We have had some rather odd sayings here as well. One that always amused me was 'As sure as eggs is eggs'.

We say as sure as God made little green apples. Or as sure as Heck was a pup.

They make our conversation colorful and interesting. I hear them all the time, but I relish hearing them and when I hear it, I enjoy it .

@RubyHawk We've lost some of this due to television an internet. An unusual one I hear occasionally is: Like white on rice. Means two things so close you can't distinguish them from one another.

I just love it , it takes me back in time. I hardly ever hear them anymore. We've lost a lot of our heritage.

Those are definitely different from what dad used to say all the time, he was the witty one in the family and unfortunately I can't remember a lot of them anymore.

Many of these are new to me and they sound like they relate to just a particular area. It's good to reminisce in this way I think. Nice to remember old times.

@RubyHawk Some do, as an example we say "she is as ugly as a deadly sin" or for someone not smart "he has not all his gears turning in the same direction".

They may be heard in Georgia, but they aren't only heard in the south - The Carters one my mother said all the time and she was a city girl!

@RubyHawk I think the same sayings are all over the US. My father was from LA and my mother from Maryland...but she picked up that saying in NJ Carters headquarters was near where we lived.

My father's favorite saying was, "It's like the story of the dozen eggs. Two (too) bad!" He was a butcher in his own grocery store and he would make his customers laugh often with that one.

@RubyHawk Yes he was a lot of fun and he loved running that grocery store and his customers. If someone came into the store with no money, he still gave them food and they left smiling. I learned a lot from him.

One of my favorites that my late mom told me about people was "Faces you see, souls you don't." or a saying from a former New Orleans sportscaster who is no longer with us which "You are nuttier than a squirrel."

@RubyHawk It is translated from Spanish which is "Caras vemos pero almas no vemos." The reason the sportscaster said "Nuttier than a squirrel is because he grew up in New Orleans and he saw a lot of squirrels in his neighborhood.
